Went to the supermarket today...

Looking for liquid honey. The top shelf had various brands of Manuka Honey, all in 500 gram jars.

The cheapest was $50 a jar, and the most expensive was $170 a jar!

I checked with the information desk, and they confirmed the prices were correct, and that they sell 5-10 jars a week...

Sounds like the healthy, higher UMF stuff. Crazy stupid prices. Standard liquid honey starts at about $10 per 500g

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Yeah they're happy to pay that price in China so we get the privileged opportunity to pay it in NZ too :)

See also, any commodity produced in NZ that is sold overseas.

The funny thing is, I don't think the majority of the purported benefits work unless you're spreading it on a wound rather than on your toast.

If it's going on toast you may as well be buying the cheap low UMF stuff (says me, who gets it for free as 'rent' for having beehives in the back paddock!). Personally I do not think it is the best tasting honey NZ produces but I guess that is a matter of personal preference.

Optimel Manuka eye cream = $35/10g = $1750/500g or a mere $1450 if you buy the 10g tubes in bulk.

Is it UMF grade honey? It has to have a UMF label on it to be 'real' Manuka Honey. If it doesn't then it's not 'real' Manuka honey.

Did some 'research/time wasting' about this. If Manuka Honey has the UMF label and a number such as +15 to +20 etc, then it's 'real' Manuka Honey and can be used for 'medicinal' purposes.

With regard to the prices in New Zealand, they're generally higher than overseas prices. (no surprise there)

sad story.

on last trip to US, we brought manuka honey as gift to friend (UMF+10, 500g purchased here for 72 NZD).

She liked it, but never thought she could buy it in US. One day she saw same brand honey UMF+10 500g screaming sign "product of NZ" for 25 USD ex. tax

:(

Last Thursday at AKL airport just before departure customs hall, same honey for over 100 NZD.
