Hi,

I am after a quantity (about 50-60 I suppose) of standard long red Chilis (to make Smoked Chili Sauce for Christmas presents).

Does anyone know where I can get them for a reasonable price? Our local countdown sells them for $1 each, which I do not find reasonable.

I am in Auckland.

A few years ago, I wanted to buy some Chilli's from the supermarket for something and couldn't believe the price, I then went to a garden centre and was able to buy a whole plant with about 4 times as many already on it for the same price!

Totally; a store like Moshims or similar will have them, as will weekend vege markets.

I went to a couple in Sandringham last week - they had none. They had heaps of the smallish green fijian chilis. Not what I need unfortunately.

Plant barn had these chilli trees for 14 dollers or so that were ready to eat. Roughly 20-30 long red chillis already on it

OK, worth checking - did you get these recently?

I do grow chilies, but it isn't quite the season for them (they normally ripen around February).

I see Kings have these - https://www.kings.co.nz/shop-online/plants/edibles-203/veggies/chilli-dwarf-hot-joker

Might take a drive to check them out. a couple of those would be ideal if they are like they are shown in the picture (and I'd assume they will re-fruit and keep growing).

Not sure what you mean by "standard long" chillies. But at that price for the Countdown ones I suspect you're meaning the large, sweet ones with virtually no heat not the Bird's eye?

But most Asian supermarkets will have them. What area of Auckland are you in?

No, I mean a standard Red Chili (not the Capsicums that look like Massive Chilies).

They aren't particularly hot, compared to a Scotch Bonnet. I'm not sure if they are called Birdseye (I thought they were smaller and hotter).

I mean these:

About 10cm long I suppose.

I have got a bucket load of these from Penray Gardens for quite a good price. You can also pick your own :)

Check out the frozen section in the Asian supermarket. They are generally frozen in large quantities.

It is a good sauce.

For anyone else that wants to try:

20 Medium Sized Red Chilis

2 Red Capsicums - Quartered and De-seeded

Half a Red Onion

6 Cloves Garlic

5 Medium Tomatoes - Chopped

Salt and Pepper to taste

A good glug of Olive Oil

Hot Smoke the above for 75 minutes

Put all in a pot with:

3 cups of Malt Vinegar

1 Cup Water

3/4 Cup Brown Sugar

1 tsp Cinnamon

1 tsp Mixed Spice

1 tsp Chinese 5 Spice

Boil for 35 Minutes

Blend with until smooth, check seasoning. Add more vinegar if not acidic enough.

Bottle.

Enjoy (great on Eggs, and sausages).
