Basically, two wrongs DO make a right.

amanzi:Basically, men have been dicks for years and so now women get to have women-only facilities while men can't get away with the same thing. If you think it sucks, then tough luck - you can blame all the other men for being dicks. You get the same thing in countries where one race has been dominant over others - that's why you can get Black Music Awards, but you'd be racist for suggesting to have White Music Awards... It's also why you can have a gay rugby match, but you better not try to start up a straights-only rugby team. If you're a straight white male, you just need to focus on being nicer to everyone. :-)
You can get away with a female only gym for two reasons:-
1) It's likely to be a club and clubs are allowed to be male only female only etc, due to an exemption in the human rights act.
2) Even if it isn't a club, no guy cares enough to bother doing anything about it.
Personally I think that women only gyms make some women comfortable to go to the gym that wouldn't go to normal gym. That can only be a good thing.
The barber shop is not a club but he can be exempt if he argues he is only skilled at the cutting of men's hair.

plod: Not sure how brothels and strip clubs get away with advertising for women only.
There is an exemption in the Human Rights Act where, for "reasons of authenticity" being of a particular sex/age is requirement for the position.

Not All Men.
Society is constantly branding all men by the actions of the few who do wrong. That kind of attitude comes at a cost and is hurting your grandfathers, your fathers, your brothers, and - most of all - your sons = MGTOW
Not all of society either, not all women and not even all feminists.
The key thing is not to buy into the collective responsibility or societal-syndrome arguments that are being advanced by some people.
I hate that people in the world are deliberately (or fecklessly) inflicting suffering on others, but I'm not going to take responsibility for the behaviour of other people just because they are the same sex as me.

Got to love those who complain about being not being equal but then to do something about it they categorize themselves or segregate themselves further and make themselves more equal than others to make up for it.

There is even a term for it: Victim Privilege

As I understand the Atrium Club in Auckland is mens only. I heard about it in RNZ once and they idea really appealed.
In my old gym there were photos of the gym from the 1950's where men lifted topless and barefooted. That idea reallly appeals to me (for some reason). BTW - I'm not gay.
Davy: That's quite right. Men's and women's gyms are popular all around the world and many find the atmosphere more relaxed because of it. The intent is to create that safe space for men or for women and it's not at all about discrimination or sexism.
Good point. What puts some women off mixed gyms (or so I have been told) is not just the way some men behave, but the way some women behave and the general atmosphere exists in some gyms.
I attend a mixed gym and it has a wide range of women and men (size, age ethnicity etc) attending, but also has etiquette requirements (dress and behaviour) that are explained when people join and no BS is tolerated.
For example: One member had a habit of leaving equipment without spraying and wiping it down (yuck). That person was warned a couple of times by staff but persisted and eventually the ban-hammer was wielded.

That sounds very much like a hashtag created by and shared amongst a certain type of person, opposed to changing social attitudes about discrimination. Struggling to come up with a reasoned argument to justify their point of view, they'll go out selectively looking for examples to prove their point - then try to present that as an inevitable consequence and/or the norm.
I get very sick of it. One reason why I despise certain aspects of social media.

My my. I could read quite a lot into why you made that declaration - some of it's possibly even on topic.
As a heterosexual male, I assume you'd possibly find a gym frequented by mainly gay males as unappealing as a woman may find a gym frequented by mainly heterosexual men.

No. I'm just conscious that the scenario I've outlined could be perceived as homoerotic. Your assumption is incorrect, I really don't give two hoots about someone's personal sexual preferences.
