We just got the letter addressed to our household on Friday. Got yours yet?

I like I expect most people on GZ will go online to complete the Census. I know two households in my short street that don't have internet access (gasp!) so they'll have to phone to get their papers sent out.

I haven't been to the Census site yet to start it. Will probably do so in the next couple of days.

I haven't looked at it yet but it'll be interesting to see the questions particularly since a number historically refer to your actions and/or location on Census day itself - such as where you are, and how you got to/from work on Census day.

Be interesting to see how many people do it given it’s online and no door knockers.

What is the login hassle? Thats what would put many off, can't be bothered, where is a pen. There should be no login needed, just the rego number I assume is sent.

That's what the FAQ implies (I haven't received my code yet so can't check).

On another note, there's an interesting entry in the FAQs:

Why do I need to make sure my browser has JavaScript turned on?

We use cookies to facilitate the login session, which requires JavaScript.

In reality, cookies do not require JavaScript so I wonder what's going on there.

Do I have to complete the census?

The Statistics Act 1975 requires that everyone in New Zealand on census day must fill out a census form. If you don’t participate, or if you provide false or incomplete information, you could be fined.

Because participation in the census is required under the Statistics Act, this overrides the general requirements of the Privacy Act.

They'll receive another letter asking them to complete the Census. Then, if they still haven't taken action, I believe they'll receive door knockers.

12 digit code for the one household. Fill one one dwelling form and submit, and each person there on 6 March fills in the one person form and submits, all using the same code

A 1975 statute may well benefit from revision. There does seem to be a slight obsession with statistics in NZ (eg Departure cards etc).

IIRC a number of countries are starting to consider if 10 year census data is really necessary in this day and age when so many other data points are collected so often anyway.

The Census access code is formatted like this:

000    000    000    AAA

Three sets of 3 digit numbers followed by a set of 3 letters.

Its 5 years.

Its valuable information, to not only know the population and demographic changes, but to locate trends that help infrastructure planning.

Yes there are many datapoints. They know all about me and my other two family members. Banks, rates, etc, but not everyone is that obvious. They should compare all know datapoints, locate those that lied or did not fill in the form, and fine them. I recall it was $500. Get IRD to instantly take it out next pay or benefit day. Then give that to charity.

A few interesting points

Once you return your census forms, the data is collated and anonymised.

Information taken from the census can only be used for statistical purposes and must be reported in a way that cannot identify you, she said.

No other organisations – including the New Zealand Police, Immigration New Zealand and Inland Revenue – can obtain census information that identifies specific individuals.

That's your prerogative of course.

This may sound cheesy, but I consider completing the census my civic duty.  A bit like voting (yes it's a pain, but I do vote in local body elections too) and jury service when called up.
