I've recently bought a 2017 15" MacBook Pro from Trade Me.

 

These models have a keyboard which can fail easily and require an expensive repair.

 

If I have the original purchaser's receipt for the computer, which was bought directly from Apple, am I covered by the CGA even if I'm the second owner? It was bought 5 months ago.

 

I'm debating purchasing AppleCare to extend the warranty so I'm covered if they keyboard breaks, but if I have a 'reasonable period' to claim any possible faults under the CGA I won't bother with AppleCare.

Isn't this a warranty issue rather than a CGA one? Best to contact apple if it is still under warranty to see what they say.

It's definitely covered by Apple's Warranty - for 12 months regardless of whether I have the receipt, but I'm asking about the CGA as the coverage period is often longer than a limited warranty.

CGA doesn't cover goods bought through a private sale.

and warranty is usually original purchaser only.

which effectively means you may need the cooperation of the original purchaser to claim warranty in some scenarios.

AFAIK, you don't even need the receipt, the serial number just has to have a valid local purchase date. I would think you'd comfortably be able to get that fault repaired by Apple if it happens within the next few years.

I would assume that CGA (Consumer guarantees act) is only for consumers. So if the Mac you have bought was bought by a company, you would not be able to get a CGA claim in against the manufacturer/importer or retailer.

 

If that is the case, I would recommend AppleCare on the machine.

The consumer guarantees act doesn't apply to private sales. 

 

However in saying that, it is quite possible you can go to the original retailer with the receipt and claim your rights under the CGA.    In my opinion it should be quite irrelevant who currently owns the product.   The CGA law is a bit unclear on this though.

This is correct.
As an AASP we don’t require proof of purchase for any Apple repairs.
We enter the serial number into apple’s repair system and it gives us an estimated purchase date and country of sale.
It then works out from that if it’s warranty coverage, CGA, or no coverage.
