Btw geekzone profile is public. If you used your real name there it is public. You can remove it or edit it anytime.

Wiggum: I dont see an issue anyway, if they have closed both of your accounts then there is nothing wrong with starting a new one and using your real name as you should. This "stalker" wont be able to find you unless he purchases something from you (you could block him/her on trademe to prevent any sales taking place). The only details he will see on trademe is your new trademe user name, and how will he/she ever know its you.

a) it's a real name and b) TradeMe profiles are public including to non members.

Trademe profiles only show the first name - not the full name.

I suppose one could have an unusual first name which may identify you but I would say in general it wouldn't be a problem.

TradeMe allows sign up and instant activation last time I looked. A perpetrator could get going again almost instantly and resume a harrasment campaign.

New users can't ask questions - only authenticated members can use the Q&A function.

I couldn't care less who I buy my stuff from, they can use what ever name they like as long as I get the product etc, what could that possibly matter?

Until something goes wrong and then you find out you, or Trademe, don't have any actual real details of the seller.

I've had purchases go bad. With one trade I had his real name and knew what town he lived in so rang all the names in the phonebook matching that name. Turns out he was just a kid. A small chat with his father got me my money back.

Have you tried contacting NetSafe for support? https://www.netsafe.org.nz/complaints/

Also make sure your report to the police included the texts, emails etc as this will fall under the Harmful Digital Communications Act which does have provisions for up to $50,000 or up to 2 years prison.

But if i was you I would contact NetSafe first as they are better geared to help you out. They may even have a contact at TradeMe who will understand and be willing to help you out.

This. They only show your first name and username. You can pick whatever you want for your username. Your first name can't be searched for either, so even if your first name was totally unique, it would only be chance if they stumbled across one of your auctions.

If they have systems in place which picks up you are using multiple accounts, those same systems would probably pick up the bad guys opening multiple accounts and shut them down.

I don't use my real name for my Trademe handle, hope I'm okay...

Word is he still lurks around these parts.

I completely forgot about this happening and can't believe somebody managed to dig up the details of it.

I've actually had my TradeMe account suspended 3 or 4 times since then when I've listed old phones. Quite a hassle to go through the motions of getting that sorted out.

If only one day we get a real competitor to TradeMe. I still have really high hopes for 4tradeit.

I was reading through this thread yesterday and had absolutely no clue I was the Brad being referenced. Doh!

If the rational of Trademe to ask for real names is to reduce fraud spam etc, surely the any competitor would do the same otherwise all the dodgy dealers will move there with the inevitable bad pr for the competitor

My issue was never about me using my real name. I have no problem with that at all.

I am surprised trademe hasn't required people link up a facebook account, like other apps that require some form of identification seem to do these days. Although I guess facebook is a competitor, and not everyone uses, or agree to use facebook.

It's only an issue if an issue comes up imo. Years ago I called the $1.99 per minute helpline about some minor issue. Anyway, after I made that call, for no particular reason as I recall they randomly updated my account name at that time. I signed up years before it was a policy so it was a mild surprise and slightly annoying.
