In the Herald:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12095896

I find:

"This pain-staking work eventually turned out several surprising discoveries."

You wonder what caused that.

Trying to drive down house prices by making Auckland a less attractive place to live perhaps? smile

Geektastic: Lack of proof reading.

Correct, Herald and Stuff perform no proof reading nor spell checking.

On the matter of the OP: I did wonder if this originated from poor subediting or software in relation to splitting (and hyphenating) words at the end of a newspaper line - of course, if this was the case, it should have been split as "pains-taking", as discussed in this blog post: https://howcanisaythat.wordpress.com/2013/06/24/painstaking-pain-staking/

But that's not a legit excuse because, looking at the electronic 'print' copy of today's Herald in PressReader, it's not split across two lines...

My favourite hyphenation issue I've spotted here on GZ a few times is the lack of one in 're-sign': re-signing and resigning have slightly different meanings!
