Last time I was in Chch, I could see a good many things needing $900,000 spending on them. Lighting a garden was not one of them though!

Especially a garden whose gates are locked during the hours of darkness, with no plans to change that arrangement, but I am sure they will look magnificent from the road when driving to or from the hospital late at night....

Any story about the NZ military on Stuff is a troll's dream.  There are so many deadly serious people who are afflicted with a sense of humour deficiency.

True -  people that seem obsessed with military hardware etc.  If someone says the NZ Army can take out a Killtron MkIV at 20 miles, expect a lecture on how the Fumblefud projectiles NZ bought for the Fuzzifux launcher will be accurate up to 10 miles, but maximum range ever recorded was 19 miles 104 yards with an 8 knot tailwind at sea level.

I posted a comment that I thought was completely innocent but for some strange reason it didn't get posted. Yet I see some really nasty comments there too. The place seems to be run by huge fans of the National Party - anything positive about Labour/Greens gets downvoted into the night.

5.) What is the point in making a long & thoughtful comment if it does not get published? This leads to people making brief comments of only one or two sentences.

The only time I read comments on Stuff is when I'm bored and want to see how stupid some people can be. The only thing I find Stuff useful for is the daily quiz.

gehenna: Why would anyone want to associate themselves with the sort of people that post comments on Stuff?

You'll have to ask sbiddle - as an avid Stuff fan, he's the SME for anything to do with them!!

Except when the quiz answers are wrong!

I think it is quite the opposite.

To be fair the Stuff moderators prob. get swamped with comments on some days & just allow a few comments and then close the story to comments, or allow almost anything due to being short of time to read them.

Over recent weeks I've become a reader of Stuff comments on the articles regarding the new Wellington bus "service" (yes, I know - promise I'll get treatment) and have formed the opinion that the general population (well Stuff readers - who are probably a subset) have no idea of how local authorities are set up in NZ and cannot distinguish between Regional Councils and City Councils. I have no idea how they manage to cast a vote at election time...

If there are any intelligent alien races out there that are tuned into the likes of Stuff comments, no frigging wonder they avoid visiting this planet.

That's a pretty challenging role to take on. The makeup artists also deserve praise!

I bet Ken's a great fisherman as well as comic genius, based on how well he's reeled one in there :-D

Amusingly though Ken's rationale is entirely wrong (perhaps deliberately so), he is correct.  Trees do reduce temperature, and not just by creating shade.
