We bought our daughter a Nintendo Switch from MightyApe for her birthday. As it turned out, the one we received was missing the AC adapter *and* doesn’t charge either in its own dock, our son’s Switch dock or when directly connected to an adapter (charging is just USB-C). Logged a ticket with MightyApe and will be returning it for assessment. No complaints there, these things happen. But it does mean she won’t have her birthday present for probably several weeks.

Not to worry: I am a jealous man and have begun to covet my own Switch so I decided to simply buy another one, give that to her, and keep the repaired/replaced one when it comes back. I may even let my wife use it sometimes.

So I went to NL armed with a print out of the MightyApe product page as there is one just down the block so I can pick it up immediately. Go to pay.

“So, I understand you do price match. Here’s the MightyApe price,” and handed over the printout.

“Oh, that’s an online store, we don’t match that.”

“It’s not just an online store —“

“I’ll have to find my manager.” And wanders off. Meanwhile I open their site on my phone prepared to follow up with “and here is your policy that says that you do.”

He comes back and starts a whole performance of not knowing who they are, goes to the site, faffs around, pulls up a Switch and says “Oh, we can’t match that one, it’s not the same.” So I said “Correct. Scroll up. Click there, and now there.”

Some more intense scrutiny of box vs. web site, then “Oh, my manager is on break.”

“That’s ok, I’ll wait.” As if by this point I’m just going to give up. He goes away, and comes back a few minutes later with someone else, says “Do you have Flybuys?” (No) and then I bought it at the matched price.

If you don’t want to price match, I can totally respect that as a business policy. It’s not exactly a human right. But if your policy is a price match then don’t piss off your customers when they take you up on it!

Its a common practice. Been many complaints about the big hardware stores. In the end they placed so many rules around the offers it wasnt worth trying to gain the price match.

I bought some headphones a while back and found a place selling them $100 cheaper than NL. I just called before I went over and they asked me who, looked it up and said "Sure, that'll be fine."

I guess it depends on who you get on the phone - I don't think consistency is an area of excellence for large retail.

I"m not interested in buying anything from Noel Leeming now. Last two times I've tried to purchase things from them and ask for price match (washing machine from Harvey Norman and a printer from Warehouse Stationary) they weren't interested and refused.

They won't necessarily price match to online only or mighty ape though - their T&C does make this clear https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/help/terms-and-conditions/price-promise-terms-and-conditions.html

I've had vary degrees of success with it. They have been ok to deal with on the chat.

I've had pretty good experience price matching using their web site live chat. Once they verify the link you send them, they ask if you want to order in-store or online; I always choose online and (sometimes) choose pickup instead of delivery.

It's not as instantaneous as just walking into the store, but the total elapsed time has been as little as 30m for me

Yes, that was what I had pulled up ready to show him, because my reading of:

4. Price Promise applies only to regular, in-stock product offered for sale from a New Zealand retail home appliance dealer. Excludes limited quantities, special event pricing, trade quotes, stock liquidations and commercial quantities and parallel imported products. All New Zealand retailer website product offers will be considered where the product is the same.

MightyApe is a New Zealand retailer - even a 'retail home appliance dealer' to be specific, the product was the same, and it was clearly shown on their web site. If push had come to shove I could've just left and bought it at MightyApe, but I do think NL's own wording covers MightyApe 100%.

Wanted an ATV4 for my father - found one slighter cheaper from a major chain slightly cheaper than NL - so printed out price etc, wife went to NL to price match - "its not the same" - wife didnt know any better and just bought the NL one (figuring it was better than the other).

It was exactly the same. The staff just could'nt be bothered going through the process of a price match.

Sounds to me like a Commerce Commission complaint is in order.

Honestly - I don't get these complaints with Noel Leemings as I've only had very good support from them. I suppose it depends on the store, management etc.

One was I bought an Oppo A73 for my SO - I asked them if they would price match with Warehouse Stationary who had a very good deal on it and stated "if not, I am happy to go over to there" - straight away the salesperson said "no problems!" and just matched it. He then said after they actually made a loss off that purchase but it is policy to match any store. Couldn't fault the service here.

I've had other situations when they've price matched MightyApe again with no questions asked.

This is at Noel Leemings on Tory Street + Featherston Street.

Not really worth it, in this case.

As it happens, I left neutral (3/5) feedback via the survey link they sent in the emailed receipt, and they just called me a moment ago to discuss. They took it on board, especially noting that MightyApe does indeed now have a site (at Millwater) you can walk into and buy directly from - we've done it a couple of times - and they will make sure they let their staff know about that so they don't dismiss it as a purely online shop from now on. So, that's a good result, I think.

I've also only had great service with Noel Leemings, Having had them price match PBTech a couple of times with no issues.

That said in your example I would fully expect them to price match Warehouse Stationary considering they're the same parent company.

The previous time I dealt with them for an iPhone they were great. I wasn't asking for a price match that time though.

You could have gone back for a partial refund, (unless it has changed recently) their price guarantee is for 7 days from date of purchase.

My experience has only been good at at Noel Leemings Lower Hutt when buying for myself and on behalf of other people. I've also had to return a faulty product and got a refund immediately as there was no replacement stock.

My comment doesn't refute any of the poor service others have had because ii is credible that price matching is more fraught with some sales staff and stores.

I've never had any problems getting The Warehouse and The Warehouse Stationery to price-match. I always print out the evidence of the price and also evidence that it's from a shop you can walk into and not just an online store.
