Hi.

I love this time of year, it's easily my favourite, though it's easy to let the stress and rush and expense get you down.

There are some wonderful xmas carols/music around.

Feel free to share your own favourites. Xmas Grinches, please let those of us who do enjoy this time of year, enjoy in peace.

Josh Groban - O Holy Night and Little Drummer Boy

Cliff Richard - Scarlet Ribbons

12 Days of Christmas  - Frank Kelly - Very amusing.

Celine Dion - So This Is Christmas

One of the things I find, is that Carols bring out the emotion and power of peoples voices. It's awesome.

Added Movies :)

Whichever one isn't playing in every shop I go into every day :)

I much prefer the old Christmas jazz songs from the early-mid 20th century.

That's a tough one. Possibly The Pogues - "Fairytale Of New York".

Despite being grinchy in another thread (about wishing people Merry Christmas too early on-line) i do like this time of year as well.

And I'm with SirHumphreyAppleby on Fairytale of New York as a favourite.  A lot of the Christmas songs are a bit soppy or cheesy  (think Wham or Mariah Carey) for my tastes.

Some of my favorites, in no particular oder

- The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl, Fairytale of New York

- Queen, Thank God it's Christmas

- Band Aid, Do they know it's Christmas

- Jose Feliciano, Feliz Navidad

- Frank Kelly, Christmas Countdown (The Twelve Days of Christmas)

- Polly Gillespie, Sleeps till Santa. If you're of a certain age and used to listen to ZM Wellington back in the day, then you'll maybe remember this song.

The old Wellington Carol's by Candlelight (held on Frank Kitts park) of the early 00's used to be a good event when hosted by ZM. The Polly song and Band Aid song used to get everyone singing

And not wanting to hijack this thread, those of us that are fans of the The Pogues Fairytale might not get to hear it on commercial radio anymore soon if certain groups get there way.

I don't really have a favourite. I have them playing in the background. I have been listening the Steve MCDonalds Christmas album of late.

I would have to go with Fairytale of New York as my absolute favourite. I am very partial to The Little Drummer Boy as well. Here It Is, Merry Xmas by Slade and Happy Xmas (War Is Over) by John Lennon & Yoko Ono are also very enjoyable.

I will say that the best music I have ever heard in a shop on Xmas Eve was Warpigs in the JB Hi-Fi in Wellington :D

And Die Hard is the best Xmas movie...

Snap - you've listed my top three Xmas songs in your four (I don't have Slade) plus my top Xmas movie!

I'm sure years ago I heard a Stevie Nicks version of Little Drummer Boy, but I have never been able to track it down.

It's a tradition (of about eight years!) in our family to play cheesy Xmas music while we decorate the tree and the house - Michael Buble fits the bill beautifully here, though I did find a Spotify playlist this year actually titled 'A Very Cheesy Christmas' that worked well enough (before we couldn't but help return to the tried-and-true Buble!).

My father sang in a choir so I have sat through many concerts of arcapella carols and other Christmas music, so I guess it's not a surprise that I prefer classic carols sung fairly straight by a decent choir. My pick would have to be Silent Night - simple and delightful (and I say all this as a life-long atheist).
