Here are some of the sales terms I saw today:

'40% off selected items'

'40% off - selected items excluded'

These first two seen at different shops, had me laughing to myself!  Imagine trying to explain the difference in those two terms to young children.

'Up to 50% off, all stock reduced'

'25% off printer inks when purchased with printer'

'50 % off original prices'

And umpteen variations of the above.

JB Hi-Fi had some really sharp prices such as the Canon 3000D at $379.00 but overall their sale seemed nothing special.  Only one printer appeared to have any price reduction.  One portable hard drive had exactly the same price as their other sales this year.  Logitech keyboards 20% off.

I saw one guy walking out of the mall with a boxed Christmas tree - I bet he got a good deal on that.

(I did not see the other topic in bargains and deals, so if a moderator wants to delete this one that's fine!  Thanks.)

The usual tricks from HN - The normal retail price mysteriously jumped up from a few weeks ago, and a very deep discount was then added for Boxing day brining the price back down to what it was on sale for a few months ago.

Pretty sure JB Hi-Fi are doing the same as HN judging by prices on their cameras and portable hard drives.  Other discounts on things such as the Logitech keyboards may be more genuine.

What products exactly?

Are they claiming a percentage off deal?

JB are advertising Bose QC25 headphones on TV (seriously where do they find all this old stock?!) for $289 and claiming 40% off. Sure it may be 40% off what they were selling them for but there are plenty of places that have only been selling them for $299 for months.

Sony Australia did that here.

Got an email saying "50% off A8F.. Now only $1999, RRP $3999" but the Sony Au website had them for $3198 for ages.

Wondering whether I should waste some time and complain.

yes very borderline "percent off" labels. i think if you always sell it at X price and always discount it during a sale, then that's ok. if you sell it a Y price and claim discount off X then you probably should be prosecuted. but most people sell their item at X price but have a sale on more days than it is not on sale ... that's how they blur the line i guess?

Swype on iOS is detrimental to accurate typing. Apologies in advance.

'40% off selected items'

(Implies that a small(ish) part of the stock is discounted by 40%?)

'40% off - selected items excluded'

(To give the impression that the majority of the stock will be discounted by 40%?)
