Thanks so much everyone for the opinions and advice. I’ll be going back today and update with the result.

Update: Just phoned the store and spoke to a helpful young man who is going to replace it or refund it for me. I just need to ask for him by name when I get there. It really does make a huge difference who you talk to!

Sounds like a great outcome.

Even though you might be happy and/or relieved at the outcome, you should complain to the store manager that it wasn’t handled properly in the first instance. You still had to put up with a run-around. There’s no excuse for that.

Yes, I will do that in writing so there’s a record of it. I did not appreciate the insinuation that I was being dishonest. I realise that some people really try it on, but clearly it would be impossible for stores to fulfill their CGA obligations if they refused to replace everything that a customer could have damaged themselves.

Slightly off-topic but if couriers were wonderful, fast, and efficient, no bricks and mortar retailer would dare to do this fobbing off b.s. they so regularly engage in.  Many people shop at the mall mainly because of the crappiness of the courier system.
