RNZ reports that an arrest warrant has been issued for a 'British tourist' who failed to show up in court today for a hearing. I don't know who this person is but could make a guess. I'm sure some others could as well. The individual has or had name suppression so be cautious with comments.

Minor offense, and the guy has since returned back to the UK, they are hardly going to extradite. It is probably enough to deter him from returning .

Let us hope. I didn't know that.

If the court had really wanted him to turn up I presume that he would have been required to surrender his passport at the bail stage.

I think he is still here, and is without a passport... ( hence the restriction on applying for a new one)

"Another member of the group, 26, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with assault with a weapon, reckless driving fraud by dishonestly using a document.

He appeared at Auckland District Court and was bailed until February"

As part of his bail he was required to present himself at the Auckland central police station every day, not apply for any travel documents, not contact two other alleged offenders, and not engage in any work.

Kind of wish they just made him pay a fine and then left him leave and a ban on returning to NZ

It will take up more time and money running after him now.

Agreed. Sometimes the judicial mind is curious.

Many years ago, when I lived in the SE of England, there was a news item about a foreign person who was found stowed away in a lorry at Dover. He had been in the UK for a few years illegally, did not get on and decided to go home.

He was hauled up in front of the Beak in Canterbury for trying to exit the country illegally whereupon he was sentenced to a year in prison and then to be deported.

It would have been cheaper to give him £20,000 and a ticket home.

He hasn't entered a plea so they couldn't make him do anything.
