If its gets anywhere near us and brings more than a teaspoon of rain we are gonna have the "from Fires to Floods" stories run on high rotate for the next week....

I know someone who is familiar with a state of emergency, and I also know he is free most of the time.......

(Its a political joke, just so I don't offend anyone making light of a state of emergency)

IMO it seems to be the media sniffing for a story in order to get clicks. They tend to blow these things up creating panic

A Case in point. On the front page of one newspaper websie, it has the main headline .Cyclone Oma destruction will be 'devastating''

But when you click through to the story, it then says 'Cyclone Oma destruction will be 'devastating' if it hits NZ'. Talk about a clickbait headline.

Yup.  The boy who cried wolf should be compulsory reading for journalists covering possible pending disasters.

The water is warmer than the average as per last year. Maybe a bit less, but some areas have got very warm. That will assist the cyclone to get closer to us.

Does anyone know why it is called Oma? That is the Dutch word for grandmother..

It's a recognised girls name

Also

  • Arabic: Mother, people, nation

  • German: Grandmother, probably derived from the Latin meaning

  • Hebrew: Reverent, devoted

  • Irish: The color of olive

  • Latin: Mother and another name for the Roman fertility goddess Bona Dea

Thanks, I didn't know it was a girl's name. Hadn't come across it

Really hope it swings by rapidly. We had Wings Over Wairarapa cancelled last time out due to torrential rain and don’t want the same again; particularly with the Buff flyover on Saturday.

The show is being opened with a flyover from a B-52 coming from Guam and on its way to Melbourne for Avalon. A unique opportunity for aviation aficionados in NZ. The aircrafts nickname is Buff - Big Ugly Fat F*****.
