Hi,

 

I just received a phone call (from 006498892145) with some sort of robotic recorded message telling me the IRD was calling due to a law suit against me.

 

I logged in on their website and didn't seen anything in particular so I'm gonna assume it's not the case...

 

Anyone had that phone call?

Last one I had was all in an Asian language (assume Chinese?) and IRD was clearly said in English. 

 

There was a thread on it here somewhere a while back...quite a common one. 

 

Must've changed things up a bit. Adding a lawsuit - that's a good one.

31-March is the start of tax / EOFY

 

As you can imagine, these and the BS refund emails spark up this time each year.

Wish telcos would setup a system to stop bot and auto callers. Very simple systems exist as they do it in the UK.

How would they tell if it was a bot caller tho ? The phone numbers are valid, so cant just block a range etc.

Truecaller manage to ID many scams.

 

They could at least do blocking on the network side rather than rely on apps which dont always work as expected like when on another call or something.

The caller ID in this example (0064...) is invalid as that's a domestic code being rendered in the international style.

 

Yet another giveaway that the Caller ID is being forged by someone who hasn't gotten it 'quite right'.

 

 

The problem is that there's no way to 'prove' the Caller ID presented to the recipient is invalid. Only the telco's can do anything about the call addressing and mainly they'll only know that it's coming through an upstream supplier who also deliver a large number of legit calls. Basically the network was set up on the assumption that telco's would control everything and not really envisaged to become a fraudsters heaven. :(

I remember reading that this happened to a guy in Taupo ...

IRD said this week hundreds of
people had received calls from
scammers claiming to be from the
tax collector threatening people
over tax evasion and police are
now police are warning about
aggressive scams after the case
involving the Taupo man came to
light.
It started when he received a
message on his landline from
someone claiming to be from the
Inland Revenue Department.
He was told there was a warrant out for his arrest due to tax
evasions and unpaid tax.

 

 

 

This type of crime sickens me, but I can't fathom how people fall for it.

Thankfully some stores are wising up to elder folks buying up large amounts of iTunes cards and querying what theyre for, and have saved a few people from being ripped off.
