the company says it moved the receptionists to a different area, told the contract workers they could go home on full pay and offered free counselling to support them

Why the absolute f&%$ should anybody be so traumatised by a few maggots dropping from a dead bird that they'd need "counselling".

(this reminds me that I need to go clean out the fly traps in our chicken run - if I don't post again for a few days, it's obviously 'cause I'm incapacitated with PTSD)

When I was on PABX maintenance we had a battery mechanic who supposedly looked after the batteries on the larger systems. I was rung by the operators at an Insurance Co because they'd seen him go down to the pabx room but hadn't seen him come back. As Frank?? didn't look that healthy they wouldn't look for him in case he'd died down there. That was something they left me to find out. He had just had a few hours sleep and left when they weren't looking.

Years later phone company employees just vanishing is commonplace 😂

It was counselling from EAP, which most companies now use for this. IIRC, they offer six free sessions per employee per year. So counselling was offered, but I would be surprised if the unnamed contractor took up the offer.

Correct. But yeah, they wouldnt have used it unless there was some other underlying issue which flipped them out over it.

I took it that the core issue was bullying by management

Reminds me of a place I used to work at. There was an odor hanging aruond reception which turned out to be a dead mouse under a staircase at the back of the reception. The pest control man couldn't get the mouse out (I think he was too lazy) and advised us not to worry, the corpse would decay in a couple of days and stop smeling. Well, the smell lasted at least a week more and so the receptionist was duly issued with... a can of air freshener.

How come a maintenance person wasn't called straight away to rectify the problem?
