Closest I've come to paying for porn was sometime in the 90's when "age gates" were a thing and if you wanted into a free "adult" website you had to verify your age by paying some token amount with a credit card. I paid to get into something that wasn't porn (I forget exactly) and got porn sites as a bonus.

I've been to strip clubs plenty of times, often they are the places with the latest licenses in town and if you want to drink after 3am there isn't much choice, but the boobs are definitely a bonus lol.

Information wants to be free. The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.

Rikkitic: I am opposed to censorship and I have no problem with anything that does not hurt others, but I do have to wonder what the appeal of witnessing such a feat can possibly be.

@Rikkitic, XXX content on the internet is very easy to stumble across with a poor choice of search words.  My younger kids have come across it, and there is some pretty extreme stuff only a few mouse clicks away.  How would you suggest protecting young eyes?

Education first. Technology can only do so much. You can make sure to let them use their own, non-Administrator accounts with parental controls enabled. You can use smartphone apps to manage access to content. Most platforms allow you to manage things online: Microsoft Account Family allows you to manage a child account (so even their own login on your Windows computer can be managed in terms of time, applications and what they can search or see). Google Family Link can be used for Android and Chrome OS. Family-safe DNS on your router/network will add a layer.

But as I said, you can prevent things under your control - you have no control over school networks, bad friends, etc. You can talk and explain things. Running away from reality doesn't work.

It may be known to some here that the Adult Entertainment Industry show happens in Las Vegas in January and sometimes it overlaps with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES)... I happened to be in Las Vegas, conveniently attending the CES on a couple of the occasions when this coincidence happened.

Very interesting.

Google these things

1.Cisco Family Shield
I also force the devices on the network to the use the DNS assigned in the router.

2. cname forcesafesearch.google.com strict.bing.com
e.g.
https://spotlightcybersecurity.com/openwrt-dnsmasq-google-youtube-bing-filtering.html
https://www.leowkahman.com/2017/09/11/enforce-safe-search-on-google-youtube-bing/

3. Disney Circle

I do the first two, I have no experience with the 3rd but my boss uses it in conjunction with the first.
These will stop accidental finding of porn, a determined older kid with an aptitude for I.T. and googling will find ways around them.

I watched the AVN awards once quite a few years ago, the comedian / MC of the night alluded to this very point -

"Never in the history of Vegas has there been such stark differences in attendees, one hotel filled with guests that everyone wants to f...., another hotel full of guests that no one wants to f..."

Clearly poking fun at the stereo typical "nerd"

The children in my life are grown now and I have no special expertise in this area, but I completely agree with what @freitasm says. I don’t believe in censorship, but even if I did, it doesn’t work. I don’t think any censorship can completely shield children from this sort of stuff. Sooner or later they will encounter it. Either you can try to prepare them as well as possible, or you can stick their heads in the sand and keep them in fairyland until reality strikes their innocent souls and completely freaks them out.

How to prepare them? I certainly would not go out of my way to expose them to this stuff, but if they do encounter it, I would not react in shock and horror and make them pray for forgiveness. Kids, even very young ones, are smarter than most adults give them credit for. They also pick up cues from how adults react to things. Some porn really is filthy and horrible, and I would hope to spare them that, but if I had to, I would explain that hurting people is always wrong and that is why those images are better avoided. Children are perfectly capable of understanding that and they are usually satisfied if they are given an explanation that doesn’t go all coy or talk down to them.

Why are the people not wearing any clothes? Because they are being funny. You can find ways to give straight answers to questions without getting into things beyond a child’s comprehension. If they are old enough to know what they are looking at, then maybe it is time for that talk. Not about the mechanics, unless they ask, but about respect and relationships and how people can have fun playing together as long as both are enjoying the game and no-one is being forced to participate.

Unfortunately, a lot of adults have sex hang-ups and they communicate this to their kids. Something that is natural and good becomes dirty and shameful. You have morons like Hilary Berry on TV getting so embarrassed over the dildo incident with Steven Joyce that she couldn’t even speak the word and collapsed in silly giggles. That kind of thing, in my opinion, is far more damaging to young psyches than seeing people having healthy sex. She is the worst type of up-tight prude and she will pass that on to any children in her orbit. It’s a shame.

So the answer is education. Make sure your kids have the right information appropriate to their level of understanding and can discuss the subject without embarrassment or fear so they can ask you questions when they see something they don’t understand. Give them real answers, not BS. Then they can figure out for themselves what is right and healthy and what is not.
