It seems many Anzac Day parades and services, in Auckland at least, are to be cancelled. The RSA say they've been advised to cancel because of the "current terror threat level". On the other hand the Police are saying there's "no specific risk to public safety at this time".

These services are a long-standing tradition and of real significance to many NZ'ers.  This is not some triviality like changing the name of a rugby team.  If there's a reason for cancelling then fair enough, but surely we're grown up enough to be told what the nature of threat is, perceived or otherwise.

Sounds like the RSA has gone into the Sky is Falling mode. Quick lets cancel things. A pack of wimps.

After 17 years of living here (as an Aussie) I finally got my NZ citizenship on the Monday after the Christchurch attack. Almost the very first thing said was "This is the first citizenship ceremony in the Auckland region after Christchurch. We considered cancelling it tonight, but then we thought about how that would be exactly the kind of thing the attacker would want us to do, so we are going ahead." Police & private security were there, which apparently there normally are not, but I believe they made the right decision.

Cancelling ANZAC services sends the same message: "OK terrorists, you won. We're afraid."

Let's not be like America, the land of the free and home of the brave, and run headlong into fascism & war in the name of safety and security. We can rise above it.

I mean if you are going to cancel these services, then why not pretty much any other public gathering? They had September 11th rememberances on the anniversary etc. It reminds me of the T-Shirts worn by many during the time; "Red White and Blue - These colours don't run".

It was an isolated event carried by by a single perpertrator who is now secured, and is the only attack of it's type in our history.

I personally don't feel any fear being in public more than I would have previously, though I accept I wasn't the target in the first place.

That's going a bit far. RSAs did this after considering advice from the police.

A quick and dirty calculation tells me that there have been around 3,300 deaths from terrorist attacks in the UK since 1970, most within the period I was living there.

Generally, outwith a specific threat, I don't generally recall many things being cancelled.

However, we don't possess all the information and shouldn't realistically expect to.

I agree.

I fear this really really sad event is going to be used for the wrong reasons. Its taking over, and reality is talking a back seat.

I've actually been pretty dissapointed by our response to this as a country. I felt we were better as a people than this. We haven't shown the resilience I felt we were known for in a lot of ways. We have given into the fear and panic instead of being rational and brave and strong.

Can you elaborate? Not that I disagree, I have my own strong feelings on this. While I embrace some reaction, I feel some is an over reaction.

Calling veterans that have served our nation in harms way a pack of wimps is a disgraceful unwarranted insult.

Tend to agree. I can see where they're coming from, but that's not the way to put it IMO. Feels like they've just given in completely but oh well.

I spoke to someone who was at the meeting between the Auckland RSA's and the police. Apparently the police said that based on overseas experience a follow-up attack usually happened about six weeks after the initial attack. This could be in either retaliation or support of the original attack. The police said they simply didn't have the resources to cover every parade and service and that they had to concentrate on the dawn parade at the Domain. I guess the RSA people thought that if they went ahead and something did actually happen then it would look really bad that they ignored police advice, so better to play it safe for this year.

My local RSA has cancelled their usual parade but will hold a service at their clubrooms. I'm not sure how I feel about this; if something happened at their usual parade then people could scatter in all directions since it's outside, but having a couple of hundred people crammed into one building would be like shooting fish in a barrel...

In support of the original attack?  That would be some sort of anti-Islamic white supremacist lunatic attacking returned servicemen and their families?

Its more a case of these terrorists types letting everyone else know they are here. Its not over, don't relax etc.
