xpd:

Yet my FIL tries selling a legitimate guitar, gets picked on straight away ....

Haha - what did he expect? 😁

KrazyKid: At this point I'd go to the library and find an 1930s newspaper as by dated publication.
Can understand your annoyance.

Haha, tempting but I'd hate to make it worse.

Curious turn of events:  I sent through more proof. Someone else responded this time (not the other person who has been dealing with it so far) and they removed the warning, apologised, and credited my TM account with $10.

I guess $10 credit is nice of them. Pays for a few newspapers to prove the date.  I actually got a $5 credit today from TM for doing nothing. I hadn't used it for a while to sell anything, and it said I haven't sold anything for a while and here is $5 for my next listing.

Yep, pretty happy with the credit. Interesting that they are giving some away to entice people to use TM.

My main concern after this incident is what it means for other people? It was lucky in my case that I knew (and could cite) visual methods of verifying the legitimacy of my item, but what for people who don't? Imagine having a 10 year old TM account closed because a bot / poorly trained rep strikes your account three times over a hunch.

Update:  my auction just got pulled AGAIN with an email saying I failed to provide documentation. I wonder then if the guy who supposedly fixed this for me even removed the warning from my account. I'm a bit stunned by the incompetence of this. Definitely smells like a badly made automatic flagging system. Now I feel like I should expect more of this from Trademe...

Can you reply to the email from the more helpful person? Even if it is a generic address, it may flag up with them.

I sent it to the helpful guy. At the moment he is unaware that anything was withdrawn on my account, so I've sent him the withdrawn auction and email. Just further adds to the view that it was an automated system.
