The problem with chasing the older demographic is that they risk ending up in the same position as NZME's radio stations - an aging audience that is dying off, coupled with the of difficulties getting a new generation of audience to engage with a brand that they consider unfamiliar.

They have a product that younger people have no interest in consuming. The whole music industry is shooting itself in the foot when kids are only interested in royalty free music they can use in their youtube videos now.

Broadcast TV is going the way of video stores. Who'd a thunk it?

I think Mark Weldon has a lot to answer for. That moron did a lot of bad things to Mediaworks - what survives of his changes today, apart from Bravo (a channel I don't watch and don't know anyone else who does)?

File 'Mediaworks' alongside 'Sky' in drawer labelled 'Things that used to be relevant.'

And seriously, can the demise of Married at First Sight be anything other than positive?

Then you aren't their demographic. I bet you never watch their Bravo and Three Life content.

Absolutely. It's easy for people to drop 'good riddance' into this thread based on the content that Mediaworks is broadcasting now, but we should acknowledge some of the excellent content that we had before Mark Weldon's reign of terror.

Think Campbell Live, Inside New Zealand, 3rd Degree...I really miss that type of material. Fortunately RNZ are starting to fill the gap but they haven't quite got there yet with their multimedia offering.

The project should have been scrapped.... kept nz today and 7 days.

If they weren't putting money into useless garbage would they still be in this situation.....

NZ Today? Sorry, I just don't find Guy Williams funny at all, eh. 7 Days isn't too bad although it's been running a while now.

@alasta: he got rid of some really good shows (including most of the ones you mention) to fund crap like Scout, of all things.

Unsurprisingly, as soon as the new CEO came on board it took him about 3 minutes to get rid of that drivel.

I was almost excited there that that might mean Mulligan being gone from my radio.

It's easy to say that when you're not responsible for making money. It's a business not a doer of good deeds.

If people were watching those shows they would remain however that isn't the case.

Yeah, fair point, they're definitely not chasing me nowadays.

It's never really been the same since they stopped playing The Simpsons at 7pm.

Guy Williams, I've enjoyed the few mini-doc satire kiwiana things I've seen. Some of the marketing for that got through. Probably orchestrated by the man himself rather than tv3 ; )

"MediaWorks has announced that it intends to sell MediaWorks TV, including TV3, as well as its Flower St property which includes its television head office and studios.

"The intention is for MediaWorks to sell the television side of the business while retaining ownership of radio and QMS.  The Flower Street property, in Auckland, will also be put up for sale with a lease back option for a buyer to continue to operate television from that location."

... And here we go...

"Cash-strapped MediaWorks has revealed plans to sell it TV business and its headquarters in Auckland's Eden Terrace."

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12277637

This is simply asset stripping in disguise,

They have tried to sell the Tv3 business before and no one wanted it, I doubt it will be any different this time.

its simply a cover to pocket cash from the building sale, ( its got a valuation of $18 million)  and then load up future expenses (rent) on the TV business that they will then claim is uneconomic and needs more government help.....

EDIT: Hopefully a sale will end the horrible "hybrid" radio/TV shows that they currently run... although that depends on finding a buyer, and unless they are simply trying dump it, I doubt they will get a reasonable price..
