Banks Peninsula is extinct and has been for millions of years.

Volcanoes are never really extinct and they sometimes surprise eg Versuvius . I grant you knowledge was not that great back then but Island of Montserrat has what was thought to be an extinct volcano but it erupted in 1995 and a Volcano in Alaska that erupted in 2006 the first time since before 8000BCE

Banks Peninsula is really extinct, and unless there was to be massive upheaval in NZ geology / plate tectonics, then it's going to stay extinct.

The SI volcanoes came into existence when there was a subduction zone under the SI.  That's moved North over millions of years, the Australian plate now subducts under the Pacific plate South of NZ, the Pacific plate subducts under the Australian plate North of Wellington, where the plates meet along the Alpine Fault, it's  strike slip lateral movement, not subduction which fuels the NI volcanoes, nor rifting which causes volcanoes in places like Iceland, nor (so-far not fully explained) hotspots - like Hawaii or Yellowstone, which don't seem to be related to plate tectonics.  So there's no mechanism for a return of volcanos in the SI, and if something changed so that there was, then it would only be coincidence if volcanoes erupted in the same area.

Also Northland, Taranaki, Wellington, Bank Peninsular, Tarawera. Any Volcano even those long time sleeping have the potential to erupt.

Wellington?? For all its faults Wellington isn't listed as volcanic AFAIK Do you have a reference?

Like most of NZ Wellington has a volcanic past. Spend some time looking around and you see ancient volcanoes around the Porirua coast and Wellington Harbour. For instance Mount Victoria, Karori Basin. The Harbour itself has the evidence of an ancient Caldera. The Circum- Pacific Belt (The fiery Rim) is capable of bringing to life any Volcano and creating new volanoes. Nowhere in NZ can be considered safe from volcanic activity.

I ran that past my geologist neighbour. Yes Wellington some evidence of volcanic activity eg Red Rocks but that is from millions of years ago, There were no actual volcanos at Wellington. The landscape is plate movement, that's bad enough.

I see now in the news that (Supposedly, because it was on Stuff) the RAAF are being used to transport the injured home.

It's a great idea so our burn units are not at max capacity

Apparently they had more work in a single day, than they see in a year. It is going to be in their best interests to send many of them to Oz and other countries, as many will have a long rehab ahead. It is such a tragic thing to happen.

Paddy Gower on "The Project" tonight, reported that Mark Inman wants to make a personal recovery from White Island of the body of his brother Hayden and also those of the others left on the island. Mark wrote to Jacinda Ardern saying:

"I am writing to ask for a pardon for my actions of a personal recovery". Mark also said in his memo:

"With the current conditions of sunshine baking and decomposing his body, he's going from a situation where we could have an open casket to now more than likely not having a body at all - due to your government's red tape and slow decision making."

Mark was very confident that a window of opportunity existed whereby he could safely recover the bodies before conditions changed.

The question is, should the Police grant his wish and urgently let him make a personal recovery?

It is not the difference between someone saving a live and not saving a life. The Project should be BSA'd out of existence for this.

But isn't "The Project" just reporting a factual situation? The Office of the Prime Minister is reported as replying to Mark Inman saying:

"Thank you for your email about the recovery of your brother Hayden from Whakaari/White Island. It must be an incredibly tough time for you and your whanau. We have passed your email to the Minister of Police's office who will be in touch with you about the situation very soon. Our very best wishes and thoughts are with you"... signed Dinah Okeby, Office of the Prime Minister Authorised by Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern MP, Parliament Buildings Wellington 6012

Paddy Gower then reported that the Minister of Police has not yet bothered to contact Mark, despite it being several hours since Mark received the reply from the PM's office.

Most definitely, Yes. At the same time let the helicopter pilots who have volunteered to go there and recover the rest of the bodies go in.

It's starting to look like Pike River revisited.

Nope.

The activity (drums, RSAM SSAM monitoring) on White Island has really ramped up, the island is covered in ash that'll quite possibly kill chopper motors if they try to land, they've been given the message by experts not to go, so they should damned well heed it.

If some cowboy decide to do it anyway, CAA should take their license.  I'm sorry about his dead brother.

Here's the current RSAM/SSAM. I put a red star showing the tremor that accompanied the eruption.  There is no way I'd be going near the place now:

White Island does ramp up like this - then nothing happens and it settles down, but I wouldn't be putting my life on it.
