The Kallax/Limon combo would actually be a great idea, however, I don't think it suits the room layout. I'd need to have the desk jutting out across the room, rather than against a wall.

Which would show the cable mess at the back of the desk, and be a bit weird with my monitor stand and monitors I think.

Really appreciate the suggestion though. The Ikea style is more what I'm after. I'm so Fight Club. 😁

The lack of cable management is a serious oversight by Ikea IMO. In our case we just chose to tolerate the ugliness as the overall utility and value of the Kallax/Limon combo was just unbeatable. Good luck with your search :)

Ikea Signum is ok for cable management although you still need 3rd party grommets. Not sure if they are available in NZ, we have one onmy wifes desk.

Unless you are constrained for space, I would insist on the initially called for 1800mm width. More desk space is always better in my opinion (That said, I currently have two 27" monitors, a laptop in a dock and two speaker on a 1200mm wide desk).

Personally if I could find something to fit my decor, I would get a used desk, and save the difference with your budget.

Measure the height of your current desk / work-surface, and compare to what you are going to purchase. There can be a bit of variation that can be quite important for ergonomic's. (especially if you are very tall/short)

Thanks. I saw that on on TM yesterday. What puts me off it is that it looks a tad flimsy, from the side. It looks like the desktop may sway towards the front. I could be wrong though.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'm leaning towards an Ikea Malm (with the pull out return) now. It doesn't quite have the width I was after.

But has cable management. And the return would be handy as a mini tech work bench.

Plus I'm considering retiring the 24, making the 27 a secondary and moving to a bigger primary. I had to work with the space I have - shared office space - the printer off to the left is where the sewing machine is normally located when school isn't home based (the printer is getting more use than normal).

The Ikea legs are twist lock which I was worried about for a bit, but they have held up really well, no sliding issues or anything. I should probably get around to removing the stickers off them. I now need to get the cables tidied up.

Close up of the timber as well.

I have considered getting a keyboard/mouse pad to sit under it, but haven't decided yet.

This is frickin cool. I like the price too. Looks like I'm now going down a build my own rabbit hole too! :)

This is the Ikea Signum cable management I just put onto my office desk (Aliexpress grommets).

Hi there - have you considered a desk from Stand Desk NZ (https://standdesk.nz) - they have heaps of great features and have an 1800 x 800 desk

$50 desk from Bunnings. Purchased pre-lockdown as a temporary option, but in no rush to replace it - perfect size, height, it's stable and the mouse works a treat directly on top.
