I was finally able to get people and culture to issue a school wide statement that the data will only be accessed by H&S, IT and Ministry of health, it can only be used for covid 19 contact tracing, and the data will be destroyed after two months (the initial statement was the data would be kept indefinitely).  After this statement i installed the app on my phone.

I feel I have burnt a lot of capital with the head of People and Culture (and I have to deal with them quite frequently in my role), but I also felt that no one else was going to bother to do it.

You did the right thing by you and your co-workers. While you may have burnt up a bit of capital in some quarters you have probably built capital in other areas. Also how would have have felt long term if you hadn't done anything? I bet it would have gnawed away at you.

andrewNZ: I think you'll be surprised how fast it's all forgiven and forgotten provided you continue to do your job well.

I have had to do far worse to an employer, and although the initial atmosphere was a little frosty (they were quietly furious), it was all forgotten pretty quickly.

It depends on the people at management level in the HR / P&C department.

Some are prepared to admit they got things wrong and forgive & forget - perhaps after a while. Others have l-o-n-g memories and will never let go of a (perceived or actual) slight.

You must have had the good fortune to enjoy one of the first category.
Me, not so much :(

If that's the case it's probably not the sort of place you would want to stay.

Behaviour like this from management isn't usually isolated to one area.

HR overstretch is something I've battled with as a manager. Sometimes they need a reminder that they exist to help the business, not the other way around.

:) HR in my head

Every time I see the term "HR" I think "Human Remains"

Too much time in Search & Rescue I guess

Technically the truth - when they've "let people go".

It used to be called the "Personnel Department".

I think HR is on the way out too - in some large organisations they're using far more "inclusive" creative names for the same old thing these days.

😉 For Millenials: People and Culture = HR - Human Resources

For Gen-Xers & Boomers:  People and Culture = Personnel Dept.

Nah. The latest is "People Experience (PX)".

Personal phone is personal, that means nothing work related is on it. They can't tell you what apps you should install on your personal device.

I switch on my phone when I start work and turn it off when I finish for the day. I am not on call hence no reason to answer my work phone outside the working hours. Some people even leave their work phone in the office (when working in office) because our company refuses to pay overtime or for on-call.

I'm using WoL but on my workphone.

If I'm out and about in non-work time, my work phone stays at home.

Very few teachers would have a work phone.  I would love to say work stays at school but there are simply not enough hours in the day for that to happen.

Installing the app does make life easier.  I can come in via the back gate and not have to go to the far side of school to sign in and likewise for signing out.  I just wanted the school to state exactly what the information is going to be used for.
