Softbank is looking to offload ARM Ltd apparently, rumored to raise some cash as their other properties drag them down.

Quick, someone get started on the GoFundMe page! If we act now, the GZ community could be on the ground floor to own a piece of history!

We need at least $32 billion USD dollars, quite likely more since Nvidia is interested.

Weird thing to sell, that's the most valuable thing they hold. Most of their other holdings are just the sharemarket's guesses at value, but ARM actually has real tangible value.

Exactly what I thought, given its already massive market share, and that it will only grow stronger with big outfits like Samsung and Apple moving more of their products to ARM reference designs. But then again, I don't manage multi-billion dollar companies, so what do I know haha.

Either it's a red herring, or they are really bleeding cash from the rest and want to sell the only thing of value they have.

ARM doesn't do fab. They're an IP company.

Apple buys it = Cyberdyne Systems & Tyrell Corporation

iMac 27" (late 2013), Airport Time Capsule 5th gen + Airport Express 1st gen, iPhone7, iPad6, iPad Mini5

Panasonic Blu-ray PVR DMR-BWT835 + Panasonic Viera TH-L50E6Z, Chromecast Ultra, Yamaha AVR RX-V1085

The difficult we can do immediately. The impossible takes a bit longer. But Miracles you will have to wait for.

I guess this is the problem, its so big that finding a buyer for it is not gonna be easy. As pointed out in the article, the companies with the interest and deep enough pockets to buy it are generally also licensees, so insta-monopolies.

I imagine some consortium we have never heard of will snap it up eventually.

Imagine if a chinese company buys it and then the Chinese government bans it from dealing with any US companies.

ARM has had to cut off a major contributor. Maybe some other Chinese companies too ?
https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/22/18635326/huawei-arm-chip-designs-business-suspension

Even for a company that is in a good income position its not good when your pairent is truly looking to sell you.
All sorts of short term stuff happens to make books look good that hurt long term progress.
The processor game is a constant treadmill of development, no time to take a breath.

Though it could just be fishing to see if anyone is looking to buy for 'over the odds' in this market.
Smoke out potential investment partners, then switch to an IPO, tons of free publicity.
Plus they have to placate unhappy shareholders that they at least tried all options to improve their position.

Apple may not be too concerned as they undoubtedly have a very sweet perpetual deal from when it owned part of them.
Has been doing more and more of its own in house chip development over the years.

Who is well cashed up at the moment looking for future tech industries ?
Saudi/Middle east investment , Taiwan , Singapore tech companies ?

Apple has quite a lot of cash, and quite a lot of skin in the game...

I think there is probably more downside than upside for Apple to buy ARM. It would potentially open them up for antitrust cases, and as long as they have a good deal already in place for the ARM instruction set they really don't need to worry about who owns ARM. They only license the instruction set as it is, they develop their own integrated chips that supports the ARM instruction set, and Apple are miles away from any other ARM manufacturers today.
