All dogs are expensive to KEEP.

Then how can so many beneficiaries afford dogs?

That, I never understood.

He decided waiting for us to open the glass sliding doors was a waste of time and made his own entranceway.

Vintage lab.  Mine chased an invading cat (not ours) out the cat door.  Took the plywood door panel with him.  It was like watching a cartoon.  Then he got in the way constantly while I was fixing/painting the door.

Yeah, ours couldn't help fix anything when he got home a week later, both front legs plastered and had to live in his crate for a couple of weeks - only out for food and toilet.

He loves our vet - saw more of the vet than us for that time :D Goes crazy when we get near the vets for any checkups etc and all the staff know him ;)

He would've cost even more, because the vet said with a lot of larger dogs when they replace the casts, the dogs can get agitated, so they tend to sedate them. With ours, they just asked for his paw, he'd stick out and they do what they needed to, he didn't have a care in the world. So less drug money involved ;)

Well, our $100 lab turned into a $3600 lab after a year or so. He decided waiting for us to open the glass sliding doors was a waste of time and made his own entranceway. Almost lost his leg over it.

Was a Waitangi weekend, 11pm, mad rush to after hours vets, back home wondering if we were ever going to see him again after seeing the amount of blood everywhere........ was an expensive weekend in many ways.

But he came back home with 4 paw power intact and is still his stupid self.

We wouldn't be without him even if it was going to cost us more. He's an awesome mutt and loves us to pieces and vice versa.

Beautiful dog hope he’s ok, we had a black female sad to have to get her put down , we waited 2 years to see if right time for a new family dog . Labs are great thinking of a male retriever this time but was shocked at how much they are these days

BlueShift:

We paid $1500 just after lockdown for our wee fluffball, and that was a bargain! Similar dogs were anywhere from $800 to $3500 depending on location and who knows what else.

We looked all over the North Island on TM, FB & etc, and in the end he was literally just around the corner from us. Friends of ours made a frankly illegal trip to Northland from Hamilton during lockdown to collect their Lab puppy, and they paid close to $3K.

As you've seen, the larger, mixed breeds are less popular and therefore cheaper.

Super cute dogs , 1500 was a good price and well worth it as part of the family

Reminds me of the time our dogs took exception to being left in the Garage during the day. They had learned to open the garage door so we put a big cabinet and a chair on top by this door. When we came back they had got on top of the cabinet and chewed through the door frame.

Oh yeah, he's fine, was a few years ago he did that.  The only way you can tell he ever did it, is a slight scar above his right paw, and occasionally he sorts of "rolls" that paw (injury had cut right down to the bone), but otherwise he still runs around like a complete idiot at 100mph :)

When the time comes, and the situation allows, we'll definitely get another lab.

Friend has been doing the guide dog puppy raising, she had her latest lab with her a few weeks ago with his coat on for a training walk....  he walked straight into a lamp post - in front of a crowded cafe. People were laughing their heads off ;)

It's not just dogs. Cats too have gone up a lot 1000-2000 or even higher from a respected breeder for a pure bred. But IMO it is worth it , because the more care that is put in initially and and care form which all takes a lot of time,  can dictate how they will act and behave.

Crikey! I remember the one and only time we had a cat, he cost us $35.00 from the local pet shop as a kitten.

We just waited until the local stray had kittens. Which was at least 2x a year. Had 8 cats at one stage....

Just becuase you have a dog doesn't mean it's well kept.

Besides food, good owners will have insurance, inoculations, check ups, dog registration etc.

Many people don't seem to understand this and they get a dog for free since someone's dog had puppies. Then they cant afford to get their dog "fixed" so they end up with more puppies and so forth.

This is why the SPCA won't let you adopt a dog without getting it fixed.

So really there are 3 ways to get a dog

1. Get a purebred, usually with restrictions on breeding
2. Get a SPCA dog and it gets fixed
3. Get a free dog and continue to contribute to the problem

chevrolux: Yea good breeders spend real money on litters. We paid $1500 for our Dobermann a few years ago and the breeder was quite up front that it really just covers the vet costs. She also imported sperm and did genetic testing for known hereditary issues.

They are anything from $2k upwards now. We got out latest Doberman (we've had 8 now) 3 months ago and she was $2000. There are less Doberman breeders around now as some chucked their toys out the pram and stopped breeding when tail docking was banned.

Our latest has a tail and it's just fine.

Some wild generalisations there...we got a free dog and are most definitely NOT in camp number 3.

He was fixed, well looked after and we can afford to keep him and do not contribute any problems whatsoever (other than the occasional dead spot on the lawn from excessive urination).
