The conditions as described need to be looked at if they are in fact the case (I am sceptical of this a little bit only due to the several people being asked by the "protestors" - and I use that term lightly because they are damaging property and hurling objects at people - have been unable to resolve the situation -- it seems a pretty basic thing to get an agreement on, right? clean water, clean clothes, clean eating facilities?)

Basic amenities are what I agree on here. If they have what some prisons have like underfloor heating, maybe redirect where the investment is going toward basic needs. Being in prison shouldn't cause them to be ill, that's just going to open a huge can of worms. I'm not saying we should be molly coddling them, just reiterating the need for an environment where they've got a chance at not getting ill and spreading disease to each other and to visitors and therefore the general population

I, too, expected there to be more of the population involved, but maybe the rest of them don't care about the conditions. It's not an easy one without fully knowing and understanding both sides of this argument.

Some of the demands are reasonable. The brown water, the clothes, towels, bedding etc. They're complaining about no toilet seat but from what I understand it's not at all uncommon for prison toilets to not have seats. They're designed that way deliberately. As for eating out of a paper bag next to toilets... there are different stories as to whether the toilets are communal toilets or if it's the toilet in each cell. If it's the toilet in each cell, then I have no sympathy for that. Everything that happens in a cell happens in proximity to the toilet. There's probably a reason why they're having food brought to them in a paper bag rather than them being able to eat in a communal mess hall. I'll venture it's related to bad behaviour when they're out of their cells. I find it hard to believe that the prisoners are being made to go to a communal toilet area and stay there while they eat their lunch.

I think we should be clear about something. This is not a protest. This is not an uprising. It's a riot - pure and simple. Setting the place on fire and using makeshift weapons to smash up cells is not a protest. Assaulting one of their mates who wanted to surrender is not a protest.

Don’t confuse fact with opinion. It is opinion that this is not a protest.

There are ways to protest without beating up people and ransacking buildings. It's a riot. They haven't done their cause, what ever it was, any good. I doubt they have much support from the general population.

It may be the opinion of some people that these prisoners are simply having a protest. I think those people are dreaming.

I'd guess most were not interested in adding months to sentences, and/or being denied parole in relation to this.

I presume that there is an Inspector Of Prisons in NZ with the job of carrying out independent inspections and reporting accordingly?

My wife’s answer to this was “drone strike” when I asked her!

Perhaps not, and this is what I mean about knowing the whole story and understanding it - there are bound to be other key details not put down on paper

Recent reports already posted in this thread. No wonder your views are so antediluvian- you are operating in ignorance.

You people are a disgrace.

Prison is not a place to be punished, your loss of freedom in prison IS the punishment.
Their time in prison needs to be spent developing the skills needed to find their feet when their time is served.

Treating people like crap does not make them to want to be better people.

If their grievances are things like not having access to toilet paper, then I fully support their actions.
They didn't wake up, find the bog roll was nearly out and decide to burn it all down. They know full well there are serious consequences and they have been pushed far enough to risk them.

PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE!

I'm glad there are several people that can lump all posters into one group of people - this discussion is pretty pointless and just a lot of finger pointing, not a lot of objectivity going on.
