Zeal: That’s a whole 10 months😟 does any one know if processing time will ease this year as the website says

there is no logic. Some people getting their approval in 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 while others are waiting for more than 12 and 13 months. It seems they are using a buggy system :P

What they doing now is good if there was no huge backlog of applications for people waiting for almost a year to get their applications processed, that is good for new applicants and I consider this an achievement. But on the other hand its totally unfair for those who applied a year ago to get their application delayed that much for the sake of reducing the backlog !!

FYI not all online application are getting prioritised as well, some online applications are delayed like paper application. The logic is not clear and I believe DIA owe those applicant a clear justification for their decision and the way they handle the backlog

Is there anyone who had Citizenship approval after 30th Jun and had an email with the print date? normally how many times a month do they print out the certificates?

28 May

...

Applied for NZ passport this morning, just in time to have to pay the increased price.  It went up on 25 May, it's now $199 for standard delivery.  They have addressed the delay issues they were having.......by stating the standard time frame is now 1 month.

...

5 July

It's now been a month and a week and I still don't have my passport.  I decided to give them a call yesterday and after over an hour on hold spoke to Angela who was delightful and trying to be helpful but ended up not being particularly useful.  She could see my application but couldn't confirm that it had actually reached the processing stage yet, essentially implying that the txts above are meaningless.  She then talked about a month meaning thirty business days ???.  She tried to give me some comfort that I should have it within the next week or two.  She added that many people are now choosing to upgrade their application to urgent and paying the extra $200....I guess that means non-urgent ones will sit in the queue for longer.  They have now added a banner to their webpage to say that standard application are currently taking up to six weeks because of backlogs..........what an utter shambles.

Received a 'photo rejected' message from them on 7 July (followed by a phone call from them on 8 July).  Submitted new photo on 9 July, received automated response that I would hear within 1-3 days if that one was no good either.

More silence, I phoned them up yesterday ( at 09:00 when the call-centre opens, wait-time was less than 10 minutes).  Agent once again very friendly (can't recall his name sorry) and this time very helpful.  Agreed that 7.5 weeks was indeed a long wait, put me on hold for a few minutes to check status.  Came back on and said new photo seems to look OK and he would give someone somewhere a nudge to move it along.

Received email at 16:30 to confirm passport had been printed and would be couriered shortly, followed shortly by a 'parcel tracking' email from NZ Post.

Total time elapsed between submission of application for citizenship and delivery of passport: 431 days

I don't what to say!

People are waiting for more than 13 months to be assigned to a case officer and others getting their citizenship in 3 months. People getting their citizenship cert printed in 1 week and some others waiting for 2 months. Nobody knows what is going on! It is horrible and not fair at all.

If you talk to them no clear answers. 😡

I can understand DIA is trying to address issues in old system and wanted to be more productive by introducing online system. But its not good for someone who had applied 1st and waiting for months to be allocated to CO and still won’t hear back anything. where as others who applied after and get approved in few months ( whatever the applicant is; easy or more checks needed) I believe, It should be in a sequential order. May be this should be escalated further but to Whom ? How?

If you try to escalate it, they will simply copy and paste the answer form the website:

The times given below are estimates only. Some applications may take longer due to:

  • external checks with other government agencies
  • the applicant not meeting 1 or more of the requirements for New Zealand citizenship on the date they applied.

Table 1: Citizenship application timeframes Application process stages Estimated timeframe Application allocated to a case officer 2 to 13 months

You can report a complaint to the parliament and keep following up, sent your complaint to :

I will do the same regarding the same subject and many others I know will do .

Good luck

Just an FYI for those getting citizenship and possibly travelling on their dual passport.

I returned from the USA on my UK passport over the weekend. The passport is still valid and has my permanent resident visa in it (physical visa sticker, not e-visa)

Although they let me fly home they had to check with immigration who then told me that you need an endorsement in your dual passport (rather than the PR visa). This wasnt mentioned when I got citizenship.

PS for those who are going to ask I have a business visa for the US which is why I was travelling on that passport.

This is interesting, thanks. I have been here 25 years, 22 as a citizen and never used my previous passport (I actually don't even have another country's passport at the moment) but this could come in handy if I decide to renew the other country's passport.
