Gotta be godless with all that moral declension around. We wouldn't want anyone having a thought for themselves or being idealistic when the Chinese are showing us the way. Don't mind my post-modern farts as I navigate past all those big show-off words.

Wow. Im sure there are lawyers who get their clients off. Take Joseph Parker. Laundering money from drug dealers, not even charged.

I might suggest that you get a grip, look at people with mental health issues, and again get a grip. IIRC 1 in 10 has mental heath issues, maybe more. Its not a simple life any more. Some struggle, then are exposed to "others" who blow it off.

Sure no problem with that. People who suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts. I don't understand how making a wrong moral choice actually relates to mental health. A man was shot dead the other week by police because he wouldn't give up his firearm. Talk about mental health. No he was rather angry about something and took it too far. Seen the increase in gun crime lately not to mention the mosque gunman? Is he mentally ill? I've been around long enough to see a difference. No perhaps western isn't in moral declension. It's the norm now.

Not guilty because Daddy didn’t hug me often enough, not so much. Today almost anything seems to be “mental illness” and to be honest it’s just too easy an excuse now.

There may be some truth in that, but also, mental health is not as stigmatised as it was in the past. So more people don't keep it to themselves for fear of shame. One of our longer serving subscribers has created a Mental Health thread, perhaps you can offer your wisdom and modern day enlightenment there...

That was my secondary point. When did science become so influential over law? That's rather frightening. No punishment for an obvious violation of law so it's not being applied equally to everybody.

@firewire If you don’t have a clue about mental does not make the science and the effects of mental wrong personal incredulity also does not make it wrong. I guess all the messages and publicity on mental health did not make it into your knowledge base.

Pomposity triggers me. Especially religious pomposity. Setting aside for a moment your tumefacted vocabulary, you seem to be assuming a lot of expertise in the fields of psychology, jurisprudence and theology.

The job of a defence attorney is to defend the client. Raising issues of mental health is a perfectly valid defence. Whether that applies in any individual case is up to the judge, jury and expert witnesses to decide. It is not up to a self-appointed vigilante out to correct the existentialist deficiencies of a godless society.

I wasn't attacking you for your point of view. I was making fun of your rather pretentious post. If I correctly understand what you are trying to express, you seem to think that mental illness is being abused as a legal defence. That may or may not be true but if that's what you think, just say so and spare us 'I wouldn't expect anything less in a post modern, nihilistic, existentialist, idealistic, Godless society.'

A violently aggressive five year-old is not a suitable subject for facile comments about not being hugged enough. Such a child has serious problems, and may well be suffering from a mental illness. Your shallow judgmentalism does nothing to improve understanding of this difficult issue.
