I choose the same thing. Very embarrasing for her personally and professionally. I feel a bit sorry for her. It'll make for some awkward moments, intentional or not, between her and whomever ends up presiding over this case.

I've got no opinion on the name suppression, but the effort to scrub their online presence was impressive in the timeframe - his business website got taken down to just wordpress, the firm she works for dropped its website completely, Linked in profiles, facebook profiles of both businesses and his own personal one, directorships of companies etc. Didn't manage to escape (initially) Google / Google cache. Not difficult but takes effort, and that effort was well and truly made!

I think this is quite a valid point. I don't know the names, and more than likely won't know the people, even if I did know the names - much like, I would suggest, the vast majority of NZ.

The people who I imagine they are trying to hide their names from - perspective employers, the old man's mates etc - they'll already know the who and the how. Suppression isn't hiding them from anyone in that respect. Any damage that could have been done, has already been done - long before the suppression order came into place.

Perhaps it has stopped their faces being plastered all over "Stuff" or other such gutter tabloids.

One thing I did hear discussed today at work was the difference having a bit of money can make. Old mate does a runner from MIQ - his mother dobs him in and apologises to the country. Two spoilt brats do a runner from Auckland, fraudulently using a document in the process (allegedly, of course), and the rich old man hires a QC to hide all their identities...

What a well executed PR strategy.

And yet everyone is entitled to their opinion. And the majority seems to be of the opinion that those two acted like dicks.

Sure and they will receive a fair and impartial trial and sentencing rather than the lynch mob kangaroo court.

I know I'm cynical and this is hypothetical, but walk through this scenario with me.

You have multi millionaire parents, one of whom is a judge and the others name is linked to hundreds of trust and entities on the companies officer register. You have a horse riding, polo playing toff son, who according to the companies office resides at the same address as his parents on what can only be described as a luxury estate in Karaka.

This spoilt little rich kid decides he's had enough of being "locked up" at mummy and daddy's mansion and  decides the rules don't apply to him because he's rich and mummy's a judge. He comes up with a plan to sneak away with his much younger and prettier lover. Things go okay at first, but after arrival at their families multi million dollar Wanaka holiday home, the locals notice and dob them into the police. He flees home to mummy, but word gets out and names start being discussed on the internet. Websites are shut down, social media profiles are scrubbed, a ruinously expensive QC is hired and strings are pulled to get emergency name suppression but it's too late, Pandora's box has been opened.

This morning an anonymous "friend", who totally wasn't an expensive hired spin doctor, rings talkback radio and says "Oh he's a nice guy, he's just made a mistake". Mummy, the QC and the totally not a spin doctor "friend" strategize and try and come up with a damage control plan. The plan for continued suppression is abandoned and instead carefully crafted press releases are prepared. Mummy releases one claiming she had no idea what was going on, the lovebirds say they've made a terrible mistake, etc. 

His mother prepares to move heaven and earth to stop him getting a conviction by using her network of judicial contacts and throwing money at the problem to ensure he gets diversion, probably via a massive donation to charity. The girl, whether or not she is found guilty of a crime, is found guilty of conduct unbecoming of a barrister or solicitor by their professional body and is disbarred. He drops her like a hot potato and moves on to the next pretty young thing, content that mummy's money saved him from a fate worse than some bad press that will fade away.
