Hundreds hit in ATM scam

The incident happened despite the Ward St ATM being fitted with the new green sleeve technology designed to protect customers from skimming.

Those "anti-skimming" devices were nothing but a joke.

Ask anybody at a BNZ or National branch or call centre what the most commonly asked question was in the months after their introduction. They were flooded with customers complaining there was a skimming device on the ATM, all because the banks and media had told everybody to be wary of things attached to the ATM's and people presumsed these devices were dodgy!

The skimmers simply attach their hardware over the front, when you have European gangs who are probably better financed than the security sections of NZ banks it's not hard to see that they will always be a step ahead.

You only need to read what's been happening in Europe recently to realise how sophisticated they are - it's hardly surprising they are all coming to NZ since our brank security is very very lax and this years EMV upgrade was a long way behind the times. PIN numbers on all credit cards should have been compulsary for years, not an optional extra.. but even then due to the flawed implimentation in most terminals even chip & PIN has been compromised since there is no encryption between the keypads and terminals which has caused significant security headaches for UK retailers since chip & PIN became compulsary.

Surprised though with eftpos, many accept credit cards and other forms of payments (internet banking etc) how many still goes out to ATMs to withdraw cash.

From Stuff story: A Waikato police spokesman said they were yet to receive any official complaints about the incident but reinforced the bank's stance on self-security.

Surprised
