RNZ says that the company lost 98% of its share value just a fortnight ago. This move looks like desperation.

I honestly thought that was an April Fools joke a few weeks late.

I know Australia's politicians are a "think of the children" bulls in a China shop: clumsy, harmful, or even authoritarian.

For the love of God, NZ politicians please don't justify clumsy policy decisions by saying they’re “protecting the children” and pass age verification apps laws.

This is exactly the kind of abyss Nietzsche warned about: "If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." Focusing too intensely on something dangerous, dark, or destructive can cause you to absorb its qualities yourself.

EU age verification app can be hacked in 2 minutes, claims security expert:

A newly unveiled European age verification app is already under fire after a security researcher claimed he bypassed its protections in under 2 minutes.

The EU on Wednesday unveiled a new age verification app designed to let users prove their age online without handing over personal data to platforms, removing the need for sites to collect sensitive information.

The criticism comes shortly after Ursula von der Leyen praised the new age verification app as “technically ready” and aligned with “the highest privacy standards,” emphasizing its open-source nature as a transparency feature.

But that transparency may have worked a little too well, as security experts took a stance on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing the security of the new ID application.

Security consultant Paul Moore detailed what he described as fundamental design flaws in the EU’s age verification system.

“Seriously, Von der Leyen – this product will be the catalyst for an enormous breach at some point. It's just a matter of time,” he said.

Politicians don't understand technology so they rely on advice and the advisors are usually those who have come through the system officially, learning by sitting dutifully in class and following prescriptions while hackers who learn by playing with things outside the rules are generally undervalued or disregarded. Expect the worst of all possible worlds in New Zealand - an imposed standardised solution that is clumsy, unworkable, buggy, an enormous pain in the butt to legitimate users, easy to bypass, expensive, and the thing that will finally make books more appealing than the Internet.

Tinkerisk:

I always thought that a conviction for a crime was supposed to be a punishment, because you should be clear about and consider the risks beforehand. It seems to be the politicians' solution: risk everything, take responsibility for nothing. A joke, indeed. No wonder Epstein was ignored and tolerated for so long. Nobody wants to be held accountable for their misdeeds.

Especially whenever a "prominent figure" or rich-lister is involved. Firstly, they can afford good lawyers. Secondly, if they ended up behind bars, it would probably involve some forfeiture of their wealth & status. To such people, that's a fate worse than death.

And regarding Allbirds going into AI, who remembers going all W.T.F. when this happened?

Checking to see if the TVNZ app was updated in the Amazon Appstore for the Fire TV... Who creates an appstore with a field for the date when the app was first released, but doesn't have a field for the last update?

Another WTF: TVNZ changed their systems but not all apps have been updated to work with the new platform, yet.

obnoxious Youtuber Johnny Somali thrives on shock‑value stunts. Public disruption is his entire brand.

Could be worse: he pulled similar stunts in Japan where he previously got kicked out.

Japan's jail punishment is more severe/regimented than Korea's is more severe than the USA.'s

if you’re talking about violence, overcrowding, and inmate‑on‑inmate harm, the order is reverse: USA is worse than Korea is worse than Japan.

I'm not sure if I should post this here or in the Politics | Deplorables thread.

She could just be tone deaf. Or trying to appeal to MAGA doom preppers wanting to move to New Zealand.

In my opinion, both.
