I was just looking up what a resignation means. I understand the academy is still going to proceed with their investigation and may still impose more sanctions but as it stand he's not exactly giving up much by resigning.

  • Yes, he still gets to keep his Best Actor Oscar for “King Richard”
  • Yes, he can still get invited to future Academy Awards ceremonies
  • Yes, he can still be nominated for future consideration
  • No, he is no longer a voting member of the Academy

I would imagine his lawyers and publicists are all guiding him now in an attempt to lesson the impact on himself and family. He has clearly showed himself to be a violent man with a temper so I assume the next step would be some kind of expensive rehab or treatment in an exclusive resort environment. If you google Will Smith motor home you will see what kind of money he does have.

Despite all this it does appear he is taking the correct steps.

I was pretty surprised by his actions, but recently feel like he has been under a lot of unfair scrutiny in his personal life and that may have contributed. He has never struck me as being a particularly aggressive person though you don't usually get to see behind the curtain.

As you say, he seems to be saying and doing the right things even if they are being filtered through his publicist, and I believe in second chances and that good people can behave badly and hopefully learn from their mistakes and be better for them.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, though hard to see he couldn't have predicted the outcome of this and found a better action in the time it took him to march onto stage.

He should be extremely thankful to Chris Rock for not pressing charges, but I am not totally sure I agree with that course of action, as it really means he won't have to live with the consequences of his actions in the same way your average person would.

As far as I can tell (and I could well be wrong), the victims don't really 'press charges' in criminal cases . Who is charged, and not charged is up to the legal authorities. Victims can of course pursue civil cases, on their own, for compensation.

In most cases if the victim doesn’t make a complaint that’s as far as it goes. Rock chose not to make a complaint.

Police were in the building and had a meeting with Chris Rock and and the producer of the Academy Awards backstage. Chris Rock was asked a couple of times if he wanted to press charges and was told police were ready to arrest Will Smith on the spot. Both times he said no. Articles about this all over the internet. In America, a lot of charging is very much largely based around what the victim wants to do, with some obvious exceptions.

I’m not sure what Chris Rock’s mother looks like - but I didn’t imagine she would look like this. The photo must have been taken years ago because Chris looks quite young.

It's great that she is openly protective of him - but not sure she will get much mileage advertising in the NZ Herald. Not helped by the slight grammatical error in her statement - her message would be clearer if she had hyphenated the last two words.

The message would've been clearer if her son's name (Oscar) had been encapsulated in commas.

I really stuff like this where you can read different things into it due to a lack punctuation 🤣

An update.

Should have had his Oscar taken off him as well imo.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/celebrities/300562389/will-smith-banned-from-oscars-other-film-academy-events-for-10-years

I am quite conflicted about that. I think I'd rather see him face criminal charges than have his oscar taken. If he deserved his oscar, then that's something different to committing a crime (and were separate things), where your punishment should be tied to the judicial system. If Chris Rock wasn't willing to press charges, it makes it harder to go down that route.

In the end, I've lost a lot of respect for the way he chose to express his anger about the comments about his wife. I understand the feelings, even to some small degree the action, but he shouldn't be free from his consequences.

I've lost respect for the man, who I thought prior to that incident, was one of the good ones.

mentalinc: Not seeing how have some who assaults people is good publicity? Normally studios would be distancing themselves

and that's exactly what has happened over the last week. Numerous projects Smith was involved in have been scrapped.

mudguard: Yeah that's how I see it. Take Rock away from the mic and give him your two cents. Just makes him look like another thug.

I can think of at least one or two actors who could have done this without making any difference to their public image. Will Smith on the other hand had a lot to lose.

Who could have done this with no consequences? I'm interested.

As above I was talking about public image not immediate consequences.

The tweet from his son directly after was not that flash saying,

"That is how we do things"
