Part of me wasn't unhappy to read about the kid that got dealt to when he robbed a rural property for the 2nd time, cutting off a finger was a step too far, but having the shit kicked out of him by the occupants, I would have no issue with. Would certainly be more of a lesson than "being surrounded by supportive Whanau"..........

I hadn't heard about this but then this turned up on Stuff.  Seems it was actually the 4th time and the violence was instigated by 'the kid'

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/300578534/gunpoint-standoff-before-teen-burglars-finger-cut-off-court-hears

"The teenager admitted he also had a knife"
"His girlfriend hit William Burr, who had been sleeping, over the head with the wine bottle."
" He said if the keys weren’t there, he would kill William Burr."

None of that was mentioned on the news reports I heard .
If someone broke into your home , threatened to kill you ,smashed you with a bottle :  wouldnt most kiwis beat the crap out of them if they could .
Especially if it wasnt the 1st time .

That teenager is lucky he's not dead . Hes lucky he wasnt shot .
This is what happens when we see that justice system does nothing to young crims .

And justice was served, I must admit I thought the finger removal was a step too far and expected Burr to have to do time for it, but clearly the jury saw through the situation, the kid clearly has issues

Finally, a proper outcome against one of these little pricks. They should be jailing him as well but I bet they wont. Kid is lucky he wasn't alive back in the days where you'd lose both your hands for stealing something.

Now we need bollards to protect schools.

Not really - that was apparently a genuine 'accident', not a deliberate ram raid type smashing.
Very unfortunate for the lady & two children on the receiving end, but the driver wasn't trying to do any damage.

I know it wasn't deliberate (or was it ...) but there are so many videos of cars violently entering buildings from car parks that I think there should be a barrier to stop it happening.

A concrete planter box will do the trick.

I don't want to be mown down standing at the till.

If it wasn't real it might actually be funny. Getting a bit beyond it now.

vigilantism has allready begun
eg , the recent court case where the young crim was caught , beaten up & had a finger cut off as punishment . (home invasion)

Its a natural response when the public see the Justice system not working .

Most of the news reports mention finger cut off but some reports mention part or tip of the finger. I guess the jury have seen the amount of damage actually done.

That wasn't a dairy or booze shop this thread and the subsequent initially relate to. People were actually already living on premises in that case.

What I can foresee is a much needed increase in physical security.

NZ businesses and homes present a comically soft target compared to many places overseas. I'm sure we've all been to places with burglar bars on every home window.

I lived in Johannesburg for a while and in my neighbourhood, many small shops didn't let customers browse the goods. Instead they waited in a caged area and had to ask for every item.

Defenses like that make it much harder to barge into a dairy and rob the tobacco products.

Dairies often make their own security worse by covering their windows with advertising which stops the public from witnessing what is occurring inside before and during a robbery.

Bollards are just the start.

l that but all confirms it then

They know they get away with it. They don't care. And being in the news makes it even more fun

Hang on. The offenders have left the scene but they 'haven't got away with it', at least not yet.

Chances are the long arm of the law will catch up with them in the end.
