Which story?

Kamahlgate

You're missing the point. It's not as simple as 'he's moved on, get over it'. There are serious questions about the how and why of his employment by a state broadcaster.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

^ this. Overlooking the impact on the victims for a second, there's also the fact that despite him doing this (or something similar) at Al Jazeera, he then got offered a role here at TVNZ, without going through any checking or following due process at all. Making it look worse (IMO) was that the person who hired him also worked with him at Al Jazeera previously; they must have known something was amiss with the guy, yet still offered him the job.

You have made the same point twice. Please create a new topic to discuss this item. Edit: or use the existing Ardern government topic.

This is a minefield for both the government and TVNZ. HR issues have privacy component that can very easily wind up in court if not handled correctly. I believe the public by virtue of the interest in TVNZ have a vested interest to have confidence that due diligence and procedure took place in the hiring process. However I feel that this does mean that the public needs to be appraised of the  details and the third party involvements given the privacy implications.

I have family who work at Al Jazeera, and there have been other poor recruiting decisions made by TVNZ. Not just this one.

But, lets face it, TVNZ is part of the government and must follow certain ideologies. And merit is not part of that equation.

I worked in government as a manager for many years and I can assure you that merit was very much part of the hiring process. It was auditable and contestable.

You strongly imply TVNZ hired Santamaria for an ideological reason. What would that reason be exactly?

It always fascinates me how some of those with large anti-government axes to grind never miss an opportunity to grind away, even on totally unrelated and unconnected topics. I wonder how many of these have much experience of either working in government or an in-depth understanding of how things work in practice?

What exactly has he been accused of?

He may well be guilty of inappropriate behavior, but isn't it all allegations without investigation or proof at this point?

It’s the golden trifecta of ignorance, envy and racism.

I can understand the wider political concern given the apparent lack of transparency from a state broadcaster currently part of a mega-merger that's mopping up hundreds of millions of dollars of funding.

But it's not hard to imagine that plain old nepotism may be the actual problem and operational shortcomings have meant it's something that someone has been able to get away with that they shouldn't have, which is a problem in pretty much every large organisation you can possibly imagine.

I think this is not so much about what he’s been accused of - more about the processes (or lack thereof) surrounding his hiring - which is a different issue.

Inappropriate behaviour towards a female colleague at TVNZ, and several at Al Jazeera. IMO, the fact that he just resigned without hardly a word doesn't look good. If he was innocent he wouldn't have left, would he? Especially when you consider he came halfway around the world to take this job and barely stayed a month. However a major concern is that this wasn't picked up on prior to him being hired by TVNZ.

Due diligence and reference checks rely heavily on the honesty of the referees and previous employers. Hospital passes are very common, the old "tag you're it"
