I'm sure there is a whole layer of Auckland society that will be traumatized about access to Pauanui. :-)

Like Omaha, Pauanui is it's own punishment: Let's drive for several hours to a baking-hot bach in an area with close to zero amenities and the same yuppie neighbours we have in Ponsonby right next to us in their baking-hot bach.

No green-eyed monsters there though 🙂

I think upgrading storm water infrastructure is one of the waters in 'Three Waters'.  It wasn't too popular - or at least how the Government packaged it and tried to sell it wasn't too popular.  But it does need to be done, along with the other two waters.

Talked to someone who was involved in this a while back and his comment on it was that councils had been deferring maintenance for decades in the interests of appealing to voters with "we'll keep rates low", with the result being that we have water infrastructure that's falling apart everywhere. For example just in our tiny cul-de-sac we have repair crews out one to two times every year patching up water mains breaks, so that's two trucks and a crew of four or so spending at least half a day digging up old fractured pipes, patching in new ones, and resurfacing where they dug, and that's ongoing 24/7 (one patchup started around 11pm and finished around 4am), 365 days a year. Three Waters is an attempt to get the pennypinching councils out of the equation and actually fix the infrastructure rather than spend probably the same amount or more on "maintenance" which is a different budget item. The thing they've totally screwed up is the governance. If it wasn't for that and it was just "we'll fix your neverending water problems" they'd probably have universal support.

Giving councils  the powers of general competence was a recipe for disaster.  Rather than waste money on pet projects councils by law should be only allowed to fund the basics. People out there think ratepayers owe them a living. The same could be said of some Mayors and councillors some of them are unemployable but local govts are a breeding ground for them.

Yes, its the same old story in politics, regional or national. People want everything done, but no more taxes or rates. Analogise that to our homes/vehicles. I can delay this expenditure, but its best not to, so I will suck it up now and not end up in a horrendous situation down the line. The key difference is that me or my wife dont need to vote for each other. Having said that, it does place regional and national govts inbetween a rock and a hard place. Do the needful, get voted out. Play it safe, kick the can, get voted in.

Rather walk to a sandy beach than walk to a... concrete jungle.

You can get the Paunui experience by going up Paku Hill with fish and chips in Tairua.

It's even better when there's someone using the airfield. Many years ago you could see warbirds there now and then.

Or just go to Tairua's ocean beach.

That one lane bridge can be a real problem though.

Stephen Joyce made a proposal to fix the water infrastructure a while back.  It included Maori consultation.

I think most people agree that the water infrastructure is pretty poor in some areas.

National will romp in at the next election, dismantle three waters, and implement something similar to what Stephen Joyce has proposed.

Let us return in 12 months and I can say I told everyone so :)

I dunno about "romp[ing] in" - National may win but given the recent change of Labour's leader I would say anything could happen at the moment.

To veer us dangerously close to on-topic again (but not quite on-topic) everyone should acutely aware of what is forecast for Monday/Tuesday in the Upper North Island.

Plan, prepare etc. If you haven't checked the drains outside your place post-27/01 and need to call AT or let the Council know, sooner might be better than later.

You can watch an animation of the next round of flooding slowly tracking down from Australia (yuck). It's been scary watching the estimates change over the last few days, 25mm, 40mm, 80mm, 95mm, ...

I'd worry about it if it happens. Take reasonable precautions, but most of the dire predictions for weather in Auckland have been wildly overblown. That might not be the case this time, but what can you do about it anyways?
