This is a good guide to track the cyclone.

NZ never gets cyclones, period, we get the aftermath, tropical storm at best.We are too far south to get any more than a rainfest. However, climate change has changed that. The air is warmer = more evaporation, the oceans are warmer, so the cyclone can and will travel further south = closer to NZ. The last two North Island issues are not a 1 in 250 issue that insurers are stating, its simply that warmer temps and warmer seas allow cyclonic activity to go further south as warmth fuels it. Yes, ducks do need to line up, but less and less ducks now. Id expect the recent North Islands events to be near seasonal now. La Nina and El Nino will vary that, as in not too bad or as bad or worse.

Its now where bordering my half brother lives, I went there twice in 4 weeks after they had a decent hit. Its heading south east, so not great. If it headed East in 24 hours, it will leave a swathe overlapping top half of NZ. But it can change.

This seems to be on-topic for this thread, one side of the house has Marley Typhoon guttering, the heaviest grade that's commonly available for residential use, which is totally inadequate for dealing with any kind of heavy rainfall. The plan was to relocate this to over the deck which currently has useless internal-clip guttering that needs to be replaced and then replace it with Magnum commercial-grade guttering, going from 87 lpm in the Typhoon to 250 lpm in the Magnum. The Magnum is only marginally bigger than the Typhoon but, with additional downpipes, looks like it'll do a better job of handling current rain levels, or at least be less bad than the Typhoon.

Can anyone see any downsides to this? Seems like a no-brainer so far but wanted to check with others first.

I'm not a plumber, but could you just have additional downpipes installed for the sole purposes of clearing the gutters? In my mind the gutters are fine its the clearing of them thats the issue, perhaps extra downpipes would solve that?

When I was in Old Windsor UK and flood was imminent Council was sending out trucks with sand bags for residents. Why don’t they have these available on request for flood prone homes here. People could keep a stack of sand bags in the back garden for such times to veer the water away. It wouldn’t help all situations but some may benefit.

You said: > The Magnum is only marginally bigger than the Typhoon

I believe you are interpreting the numbers incorrectly.

The Marley comparison chart shows the Magnum to be 2.3 _times_ the size of the Typhoon.
In my book - that is not a 'marginal' difference.
A Magnum gutter will carry more than double a Typhoon.

Sizes (in the links you provided) are:
Magnum 14,300 sq mm vs Typhoon at 6100.

Flow capacities are:
Magnum 250 l/min vs Typhoon at 87.

I've just built a house (North Auckland) and installed Magnum.
3 downpipes each draining 100 sqm of roof.

No issues with the recent rainfall.

Windy indicates it hasn't progressed far, and still predicts Sunday as hitting NZ, but news says Friday for top of north island. Am I using it wrong?

Quite a good summary, outlines possible heavy rain levels, but also its evolving, may ease away, may not

I find MetVuw forecast charts really good for events like this.  Currently has the centre moving slowly from Northland to Auckland direction Monday and Tuesday, with most of the rain hitting Monday.

Yup, Jim McGregor does a better job than the entire $20M/year Metservice. The site is well known among people who depend on good weather forecasts for e.g. marine use.

It's OK folks, I've checked with a world-renowned expert and the weather is going to miss us by a good margin:
