This is a good guide to track the cyclone.
NZ never gets cyclones, period, we get the aftermath, tropical storm at best.We are too far south to get any more than a rainfest. However, climate change has changed that. The air is warmer = more evaporation, the oceans are warmer, so the cyclone can and will travel further south = closer to NZ. The last two North Island issues are not a 1 in 250 issue that insurers are stating, its simply that warmer temps and warmer seas allow cyclonic activity to go further south as warmth fuels it. Yes, ducks do need to line up, but less and less ducks now. Id expect the recent North Islands events to be near seasonal now. La Nina and El Nino will vary that, as in not too bad or as bad or worse.
