Wellingtondave:

As an aside for the first world geeks, I've talked to a few dozen locals about going in for a Starlink (if they'd let one of us have one in an urban area), so that in a worst case event there would be communal place to get Internet and the initial buy in would be $75 and $15 per month per person to keep it active.

The Ministry of Emergency Management and FENZ should be funding a Starlink dish for every CDEM incident centre and for every rural fire service, to ensure that there is Internet access for emergency services and as a resource for community hubs during the recovery phase. This morning there was no Internet or cellular coverage north of Wairoa on the East Coast, partly because the telecoms infrastructure was blown away / under water, partly because the power was off [see "Grid emergency: Power could be out for weeks in Hawke's Bay and Gisborne" https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=303250&page_no=28#3036329].

In the whole scheme of CDEM things, this would be a tiny cost, but would provide reliable backup or primary comms in fire, flood or earthquake emergencies.

+1

Well said. I couldn't agree with you more. The cost of Starlink would be minimal.

Ge0rge: I know of at least one council whose emergency management vehicle has mobile star link.

That seems suspiciously like clear vision, an understanding of technology, and planning ahead. 😮
Are you sure you're referring to a New Zealand council?

My neighbors tree is hitting my and their own fibre line quite hard with the wind. I'm surprised it hasn't broken off yet 🙃

Auckland's in for a rough night. As the centre of the storm has moved south, it's now dragging the air around the Tasman sea and across Auckland west to east... The waitakere's offer some minor protection but I think most of us will be more exposed than yesterday... It seems stronger here in Titirangi than it has been.

This is one of those sentences that really shouldn't exist...

In all fairness, who subscribes to a 1 in a 250 year event? And thats the last ordeal not this. But moving forward and that this event due to climate change will happen again, every year or second year, then yes. Chris Luxon says he agrees and that past this, both parties need to move forward on climate change regardless of who wins. Thats great. But the reality is that NZ and the globe have failed. The immediate issue now is mitigation not resolvement. But I applaud his words. If you win we help if we win you help.  Political? Obviously, but thats the only option

Mitigation wise we need to invest in waterways. Not for beauty or skiing, but for runoff. That IS the reality

Well, it does :D

Top arrow is my fibre line and bottom arrow is neighbour's fibre line. Neighbour's fibre line has been bent through the tree for a while now...

Getting 85km/h gusts so the tree is whacking our lines a lot

Oh so they kinda cut off Thames SH25 and all points north if flood risk gets too high ?
https://www.gns.cri.nz/research-projects/kauaeranga-river-flood-protection/

Pity they did not kinda build a mini bridge to elevate highway. ;

The river has to reach 10.5m before the spillway operates and it's been a few years since it was last used. Better to flood Rhodes Park than flood half of Thames.

Agree. But it has to be reworked from now on. Period. This not an abnormal event
