My Internet has been patchy but working again this morning. Power still steady. Thanks for the good wishes all but I am one of the lucky ones. I didn't have a full picture of local conditions from just the radio news. Compared to others I got off lightly. Just a few trees down and a few leaks. Nothing major. Especially I was afraid the power would be out for much longer. MY heart goes out to those who have not fared so well. Take care everyone.

GV27:

Looking at the scenes from the Bay and the East Coast, there is just simply no way Auckland would have coped if the initial track of directly through or bouncing off the city had played out.

It just would have been chaos.

Probably better that didn't happen, but I'm gutted for Napier and the Bay that it's happened to them.

TBH the exact track becomes a bit irrelevant,  the storm is so big that its impact is damaging 100s of kms away

Someone on Twitter posted the paths of Bola and Gabrielle, they are hugely different but both pummelled the east coast of the Nth Island...

Relevant for us in this case though because the fact it slipped down the side of the Coromandel meant we got some degree of disruption in pressure and wind - if it had gone over the Plains then we would have taken far more damage.

MAGIC!!

I was going to PM you, but was aware of power and comms there, and dont waste battery nattering to me. But you will know that we all were thinking of you and other affected Zoners.

Water ok?

Just saw this working through the backlog. I am lucky in many ways. We have inexhaustible pure spring water, best in the country. That is one thing that is never a problem. I guess a really big earthquake might disrupt it but so far that hasn't happened.

Holy Christmas Trees Batman. *Torrential* rain in Central Auckland this very minute for the last 10 minutes. Serious quantities of water!

I just drove to and from Newmarket and went through that.  Torrential is a mild description.  Was crapping myself on the motorway, people gave up on lanes and just drove whereever - never seen that before

Steady rain here at the moment and reasonably heavy overnight. Barometer is edging slowly up and it's looking a bit lighter. Think I'm done with some of these weather apps - Niwa has us pegged at 6mm today, I tipped 18 out this morning and there's 6 in there now.

Which neighbourhood? Completely missed us. Looking at the rain radar it is very small localised areas:

A couple of days ago that entire frame was blue all day.

I've donated, and encourage all other Geekzoners who can afford it to do so as well.
