In fact if you look at all the mega churches, the leaders all seem to accumulate significant wealth.

Perhaps they know religion is actually a scam, so they may as well take as much as they can and lead the best life they can, all paid for by grifting the gullible.

Auckland is no better. For the last week I've been getting polls from the council asking whether I support saving a million here by de-funding the arts, a million there by paying librarians less, another half million by reducing funding for community centres. To put that in perspective the operating budget is $1.6 billion.

None of the polls have asked whether I'd support dealing with the climate catastrophe as a, you know, pretty urgent priority.

Honestly the lack of communication and support for remote communities in Hawkes bay was shocking, was the locals that cleared the roads working from dark till dark to get people who were cut off with no way in or out down off roads off SH2, ontop of that the local council commandeered any fuel stored for forestry that was being used to clear the roads. Of course no one wanted to pay the locals for clearing the roads so some of the wealthier people in community did. People who got taken helicoptered to hospital in Napier after being treated where tossed out and told to find there own way home with no support.

Thankfully our community was strong and got through it by helping eachother.

The big problem is that it destroys such large expanses of land, houses, crops, riverbank, seashore,
and bridge, after bridge.
At least one road bridge was lucky there was a rail bridge that took one for the team or more would have been cut.
The total cost ?

FWIW I know of a very ordinary congregation that has looked after its members like you wouldn’t believe when the need has arisen. Don’t let one of these muppets make your mind up for all churches.

Exactly, the vast majority of churches are fairly small, increasingly elderly, and spend their time and effort looking after the community.

My local church collects donations, but aside from maintenance of the historical building (everyone complains when these buildings get knocked down but no one wants to pay for them to stay standing) and a very low minister's salary, the remainder goes to charities helping the most desperate, e.g. last year Auckland City Mission was the largest recipient of donations passed on from this church.
