Problem with wallabies and kangs....

Was in Rotorua late last year staying out at Lake Tarawera, and on the way back from drinks one night, theres a wallaby standing on the side of the road. Somehow I was the only one to see it.... my mates claimed it was the booze and that there were no wallabies in Rotorua. Next day, went past a sign in the area to report any wallaby sightings....

Yeah I'd say it was quite possibly the booze! Unfortunately New Zealand has a bad history of introducing pests for the wrong reasons. Possums for fur trade. Rabbits and Wallabies for sport. And the problem with Wallabies is they are nocturnal so you would be lucky to see them in the day time. More info at MPI.

Lots of wallabies in that Tarawera/Okataina area. I used to hunt them as a boy. They are the Dama wallaby, which is small, grey and fine boned like a rabbit.

In the South Island it's the redneck/Bennet's wallaby which is much bigger, stockier and darker in fur colour.

Gawd, I can just imagine, wallabies that live in a double-wide and drive a rusty F150 with a gun rack on the back.

I have not spotted any here in the banks of the peninsula but see fresh possum roadkill almost every morning.

Saw that in the Guardian so it's made international news, a prizewinning "W/T/F were they thinking?", getting young kids to go out and shoot cats with air rifles is second only in PR-suicide to something involving puppies and cricket bats. Firstly, it pretty much guarantees they're going to end up killing someone's pet at some point, and an air rifle is entirely the wrong thing for this, it's unlikely to kill them but will lead to a long, longering death or just ongoing suffering.

They always seem to be very active in the late afternoon near me after about 4pm, normally about an hour or two before sunset. Plenty around and if I were hunting them this would be the perfect time to do so. I sometimes spot them in the early mornings after sunrise on my way into work too.

The redneck wallabies are out during the day when I've hunted them. In tall tussock and in the bush. The easiest way to hunt them IME, was to sit on a ridge over-looking bush-edge later afternoon/dusk. Lots of fun if you're into ranged hunting

The dama wallabies I've never seen out and about in the daytime - not even in the bush.

Well if we had laws preventing cats from roaming like they do overseas that wouldn't be so much of a problem.

A scene from crocodile Dundee comes to mind. It can be solved pretty easily with some 4x4s, bright headlines, and a few guns. Unfortunately with all the red tape and bureaucracy these days it’s not going to happen.
