I have seen paper bags that have a plastic inner coating which I guess they spray on. But that seems to be skirting around the rules, as the objective is to eliminate plastic in packaging.But buying plastic bags to put stuff in kind of defeats the purpose too.

My local pak n save had no plastic bags or paper bags for the fruit and veges when I went in yesterday. I guess they now expect people to bring their own packing. Considering how filthy trolleys can be, I wouldn't want to be putting naked fruit in contact with them.

They've fixed that with their new Sistema+ range by moulding the seal integral with the lid. Now if only they'd made the container sizes compatible with the old range...

We have reusable mesh produce bags. Some made of cotton string, some made of some sort of fine plastic mesh. Both can go in the washing machine.

They're quite handy. I use a bottom one for spuds/kumara, when I get it home it goes straight into the cupboard

I have the same for purchasing apples or other fruit. Also goes into the fridge to hold them in place.

With weight based stuff, does it get weighed outside bag, on exposed surface and possibly hand handled, or do you have to be careful bag brought is not to heavy, as will be paying for weight of bag.

When shops were supplying bag, they know bag weight so can program scales to deduct.

They just tare out the scale. There's a button on pretty much every commercial scale for this.

I’ve found that whether they seal trays or not is a bit hit and miss.

Often it’s just cling wrap around a plastic tray and that’s not sealed against liquid escape.

The cynic in me thinks that that is one reason I think supermarkets are supportive of the change as paper bags seem heavier than plastic ones, so it could increase their profits. It would be especially noticeable with light weight expensive products

Paper are almost certainly more expensive to them to provide compared to plastic though.

Yep, I was thinking more fruit and veggies, where weigh at checkout. They will already be in bag when get there. Is bag emptied here so they can tare it?

Capillary action draws the liquid out between the cling wrap and tray. Especially bad if it isn't left flat. Chicken in the worst for this.

Never ever heard of people putting their plastic-wrapped meat in another plastic bag. I’ve always, come checkout, just put meat with non-perishable things, so if there’s leakage you can just wipe it off the cans, milk bottles etc.

In a Stuff article Countdown said their scales would have a 10gm allowance for tare weight. That would cover a typical mesh bag. A $2 coin or 2x 50c coins weigh 10gms.
