Stuff News on the Police press conference.

No firearm license.
On home detention but exempt to go to work.
History of family violence, subject to search of his property in past.
Seems part of his home detention for family violence the property was searched, and no firearm there then.
Rampage was at his work site where he moved through site firing his weapon. (Seeming to target only his worksite)

Key part of investigation will be from where he acquired the shotgun, illegally.

MikeAqua: Strangulation is something quite specific, where as impeding breathing is a broader term. If you sat on my chest, you would likely impede my breathing, but you wouldn't be strangling me.

The article has been updated with additional information describing the offense leading to the conviction for "impeding breathing":

Stuff: While she was on the bed, he stood over her and used both his hands and gripped and squeezed her throat for 10 seconds. “That is not a short period of time when someone is being strangled, Mr Reid… it would have been a terrifying event for her,” Judge Bonnar said.

My question remains. Why was the offender not charged with the offense of strangulation which carries a maximum seven year period of imprisonment?

not really a key factor. odds are it will be obtained the same way most other crims get theirs. stolen at some point.

of course that hasn't stopped the media doing it usual scaremongering and gun reform nonsense.

NZ Herald has updated it's reporting to clarify the offender was convicted of the strangulation offense. It appears impeding breathing is part of that. I don't exactly understand the relationship between that and the previously reported "Impeding breathing". I'll take their word for it, and there is clearly a relationship defined in legislation. Anyway, I'm glad to hear it is in effect.

The attack he was on bail for was a lot more serious.

Reid’s victim suffered a broken bone in her neck, a black and swollen eye, bruising to her face, extensive abrasions, and was hospitalised. She suffered ongoing psychological harm.

It is relevant. If the offender did not himself first hand obtain the firearm and/or ammunition then it is possible an offense was committed in supplying it to the offender.

quite right, its relevant and i'm sure police will track it down and maybe they find a straw buyer, but its not a key factor.

but this, like many others before it, will be forgotten by next week and people will go back to their illusion of safety.

Yeah nah that was my misconception. He was convicted for strangulation apparently. I think the victim desire to see him avoid prison was a factor in that home detention sentence.

How 'generational anger' led to chaos in down town Auckland!! Really? chaos in Auckland? Chaos? The article goes on to talk about this murderers troubled life, painting the picture that he is somewhat a victim? At least this is the opinion I drew up when reading the article. Nothing about the 3 victims. It makes me angry reading this style of reporting, and I am left wondering if this is not part of the bigger problems at the moment. Sorry I read the article. What disrespect to the families of those poor victims. Shame on you stuff. Let me just leave it there.
