New firearms registry leak already. Manual address update reminders sent in email cc field to one hundred registry users

NZHerald: Auckland Central Police District firearms staff emailed more than 100 gun owners to warn them their listed firearms licence address may not be up to date.

Their email addresses, in many cases including their first and last names, were visible in the cc field, rather than hidden in the bcc section.

The visible addresses included various prominent Auckland residents, including lawyers, company directors, police officers and government officials.

It boggles the mind why that would be a manual process. Presumably a human is performing some manual reconcile and mailing 100 addresses at a time. ACT party says they will repeal firearm registration no surprises there:

“This episode demonstrates once again that the full registration of firearms is a wasteful and dangerous exercise and ACT will repeal it"

Repealing it is very silly. It exists for a reason and the major parties all support it for a reason as does the Police Association.

again it comes down to what amount of good does it achieve vers the cost and harm it generates. govt has a really poor track record of IT projects.

but its rookie mistakes like that, that you cannot have with sensitive information. this is simply case of them not understanding the seriousness of the situation. clearly people are not taking the job at hand seriously. would they handle other data like case or court documents like that? it kinda highlights how little they think of firearm safety. if police don't care how do you expect people to care.

what do think is going to happen down the track when people become complacent and they get tired of the system soaking up so much of the budget, corners get cut, staffing gets cut etc.

So what? Some email addresses were accidentally copy/pasted into a wrong field on a generic email saying to update details. Bit of a molehill really, but "OMG - the sky's falling down..."

gzt: I think it's good both Labour and National support the firearms registry which came into force last month even if it will take five years before everything is registered.

ACT wants to mostly scrap the registry and says scrapping it will be a bottom line in any coalition negotiations with the National Party. You'd think ACT has more important things to do but apparently not.

I think you are misinterpreting things here. You are correct that ACT wants to scrap the registry, but its not like their will not be a registry. I think the real problem here is who controls that registry? No goverment orginisation should, it should be under the care of a truly independent and trusted firearms authority, which ACT has committed to establishing. The registry in its current form is not working as can be seen in the recent email addresses leaks. I am pretty sure National and ACT would agree on that.

hmmm for a shopping website, or a scouts club mabye. But the email addresses of those on a gun registry? Come on. This smacks of incompetence.

I dont think anyone is saying the sky is falling, however there is a proven track record of Police being unable to secure information, including making this exact same mistake previously.

The "so what" is the fact that information allowing the identity to be established of persons who hold firearms, supposedly being kept secure, has been sent to 147 people, by the very organisation that proclaims that they will keep that information secure.

Firearms Registry to stop criminals and gangs getting guns - NZ Police. Except of course when they are providing the information that lets criminals and gangs know where to go and get them:

2022 - Documents containing firearms owners' personal information was stolen from a disused Police station,

2021 - This exact same thing occurred and 40 license holders were CC'd in an email by Police

2019 - Police are contacted by a licensed dealer, informing them that sensitive information from the buy-back database was accessible by personnel who should not have it.

2019 - Police email a convicted criminal and his laywer, as part of case disclosure, a list containing licensed owners' details, including addresses, firearms held etc. (I can't find a link to this one unfortunately).

In the last four years, Police have caused / allowed five separate privacy breaches in relation to firearms, but hey - so what, right?

Also worth bearing in mind that:

If the Police had done their job properly in applying existing legislation, the ChCh mosque shooter would not have been granted a firearms licence, and
There is no evidence to suggest that the existence of a firearms register would have prevented the recent incident
