It might be against GZ's rules but it's an accurate reflection of the views of a significant number of Wellingtonians if my social media feeds are anything to go by. They are really not making friends with Joe Bloggs commuter.

I agree they are completely miss reading the room/audience. They are screwing up an opportunity to gather support by pissing off those folk that have little if any influence to effect change. Protest at parliament, protest in a way that does not piss off folks trying to make a living. An enlightened change in tactics may well make it an election issue. This current method being used will guarantee that no party will make it an election issue and it most certainly needs to be.

We have to change or we will have few choices and our mokopuna will have no choices. You seem to be thinking in terms or the current rolling stock and locomotives in Aotearoa. My wife travelled many times on the fast trains in China and my son and daughter in law are travelling all over Europe and Scandinavia by train.

You can't abandon practical reality. We still have to live within the constraints of what NZ can afford to pay for.

We have a country where simply keeping a roof over your head is getting harder and harder, even for good earners. There isn't enough revenue to make those kind of infrastructure changes and at some point, willingly overlooking this to continue creating havoc for zero chance of success is hard to justify on any ground.

Pathos is one thing, but ultimately it comes down to a) what we can build and b) what we can afford to build.

Keeping a roof over our heads will be the very least of our problems if we don't all wake up and realise that we have procrastinated too long and we no longer have that luxury. There should be an immediate moratorium on all new expressways, airport extensions and construction, etc. It should be in all parties manifestos that following the election that there is an all party group formed to pursue urgent change to our transport infrastructure to make it environmentally sustainable. We should also put a halt on any new military equipment except for equipment that can be utilised for disaster relief.

It does not come down to what we can afford it comes down to the viability and future life for our tamariki and mokopuna. They cannot afford more selfishness.

Agreed. Every day we take the easy option because "we can't afford it" makes the options for our kids that much more expensive. Nobody expects to ground every aircraft in New Zealand on the day after the election. The changes will take years. Just like it took years to buy all the planes. And the cars. We can afford it. We simply choose not to.

You have to realise that's never going to happen, it's just too unpalatable for the vast majority of people.

If it means taxing people to the point that they can't get by then it doesn't matter whatever spectre of extinction stalks us, because at that point being alive is simply an existential exercise anyway. At that point, you have no skin in the game.

Lofty appeals to my grandkids future don't pay the bills. Tell us the actual cost and we'll see how affordable it really is.

Supposedly we don't have years, which is why it is imperative these people be able to glue themselves to things whenever they please.

When can I start RPG-ing SUVs in the street because they're gas-guzzlers?

There's already a bunch of people who go around letting their tires down. Try starting there. RPGs are expensive.

Seriously? How about protection of economic assets? Responsibilities to the Southern Ocean? Obligations to the rule of order etc etc

Making NZ less relevant than we already are.

I don't necessarily disagree with you but when was the last time the Navy sunk someone in the Southern Ocean? And how much 'protection' do you think we can actually effect towards our economic assets? Anyone with a navy big enough to come all the way down here will curb-stomp the NZ military in half an hour. But that's a discussion for a different thread.

I said "new" military spending. We currently have 4 P8a Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. Two ocean capable Frigates, and a project for enhanced satellite monitory of our economic zone. We don't need more.

I'm informed that money is apparently no object. We should definitely go down the RPG route. For the greater good.

It's like about my kid's future or something.

Have at it then. Just don't be annoyed when the police gun you down where you stand. It's only what you deserve or something.

No see I'm above scrutiny because I'm doing something lofty and aspirational/for the 'Gram and the people trying to go about their lives without getting RPG-ed are really just collateral damage.
