I baulk at the notion that the government should intervene in commercial arrangements in a “command economy” kind of way. Very Muldoon-ist.

I agree that Sanitarium should pay tax - They are a business and should pay tax like any other business.

Regardless....

On the face of it, Sanitarium have said they dont have enough supply. This could be true - though I wouldnt have thought that the volumes that the Warehouse sell would have been that much.

I also I doubt that The Warehouse would have enough clout to dictate the price they pay to Sanitarium either.

The supermarket chains have been known in the past to 'lean on' suppliers when they think that something is encroaching on their territory.

As for Sanitarium's tax exemption here and across the ditch it is wrong. Tax should not be exempt on the basis of religion. Tax exemption for genuine charities like IHC, Refuge etc absolutely.

What exactly did you want them to do?

Start imposing heavy penalties to discourage the obvious anti competition behaviour. Not bus ticket sanctions but significant financial penalties.

They have to be proven first. That has never happened.

As a Coeliac, Vegemite and Marmite both became non options for me at least a decade ago (made from Brewers yest by-products and contain gluten).

They introduced a gluten free Vegemite that I got all excited about - but excitement turned to dismay when I tried it - It tastes like weird chemicals to me.

Discovered Australian "Mighty Mite" a few years ago after a trip to Australia. Gluten free and tastes great to me. Only downside is you have to buy it there and bring it back.

Interestingly, I recently gave one of the grandkids that doesnt like Marmite/Vegemite a blind taste test of Vegemite/GF Vegemite and Mighty Mite.

She didnt like Vegemite, REALLY didn't like the GF Vegemite and thought that Mighty Mite was 'ok'.

I agree. There is definitely more to this and due to confidentiality agreements, we may never know why The Warehouse supply is the one being restricted.

One possibility is simply that there is more flexibility in their agreement. If, for example, The Warehouse agreement has no guarantee of supply and typically buys excess stock, it's entirely appropriate to cut off or restrict their supply in favour of other supermarkets that do.

I'm not a supporter of either company, but crying to the media about a contractual issue reflects poorly on The Warehouse IMO, regardless of who is actually at fault here.

Like the supermarkets, TW has a reputation for being harsh on their suppliers. It is quite possible that TW are awful to deal with so are first on the chopping block when there's a supply shortage.

I don't mind the gluten-free Vegemite - it's an adequate substitute. Better than any bread substitutes at least... 😭

Sadly I have to eat Sanitarium cornflakes for breakfast as they are superior to the Kellogg's corn flakes (crumbs and dust) I only eat about a half a cup of corn flakes for breakfast so I am not really giving Sanitarium much money.

Wow lots of resentment here for a company that has been serving us for years, makes great food at great prices both in NZ and here in Aus. I find it odd that people wish more tax on certain companies and individuals to be honest, especially individuals that have generally worked hard to be where they are.

Perhaps instead of us wishing for sanitarium to pay more tax, maybe its better to allow more companies to operate this way? Here in Aus there are many non profit organizations, my wife even works for one and it gives us the opportunity for salary sacrificing. Its a win win for both company and employers. Perhaps its time we did the same in NZ, we already getting screwed so badly when it comes to tax, why do we want people/companies to pay more? Our tax is clearly not being used appropriately.

Anyway I'm not even sure that NZ Saniterium employers are entitled to the same benefits they get from non profit organizations here in Aus. Maybe if they were, and there were more orginidations like this in NZ we would not be having this debate. I do know that most people here in Aus dont give a hoot about Sanitarium here and what they pay on tax.

If I were Sanitarium, I would cut off the retailer that I'll make the lowest margin from. That's a no brainer, unless there is a strategic reason not to.

From a consumer perspective, there are dozens of other cereals on the market. Countdown advertises an own-brand wheat biscuit at $5/kg vs the Warehouses advertised price of $7/1.2kg

Much ado about nothing.
