Well, they are all are, to us non fans.

I'll go out on a limb and say this thread is like watching a bunch of people argue about which animal's excrement they prefer on their toast. 😃

Geektastic: My personal view is that no religion should get any kind of preferential treatment in the 21st century unless they can scientifically prove that their chosen deity exists.

Try to use the word "mythology" instead of religion.

Eg. "My mother is a catholic mythology buff"
Drives them mad.

I like it! I’ll do that.

freitasm: Regardless I still think Sanitarium should be tax.

Geekzone pays more tax than some of these companies.

Are you saying that GZ is not registered as a religion for tax purposes?

But I stated Geekzoner as my religion in the census. Have I now committed fraud, to add to my many heinous crimes?

Geekzone is seen here as a dangerous cult and Weet-Bix as a kind of Soylent Green. In order to observe this, I get my internet connection financed by our secret service. Clever, isn't it? 😉

This thread went off track very quickly and developed into a Sanitarium bashing with a side helping of a Vegemite/Marmite battle.

The discussions about the tax status of Sanitarium and the relative "benefits" of Vegemite and Marmite belong elsewhere.

Back on topic.

Reading between the lines this episode smacks of the big two players (Countdown/Foodstuffs) in the food chain exerting pressure on a supplier (Sanitarium). They don't want anyone (in this case the Warehouse) upsetting their nice cosy duopoly.

When I know that about 12 to 18 months ago Fonterra was selling cheese to the supermarket chains for around $5.00 per kilo and that cheese was retailing for around $18.00 per kilo I have to strongly suspect that we, the New Zealand consumer, are being ripped off by our supermarkets.

When I hear of a retailer (who is undercutting the major players) is no longer being supplied of a product like Weetbix due to supply constraints my antenna start to jangle.

Supply constraints? We're not hearing about other similar products with supply issues. It's not as if the Warehouse has grown the market to the extent to put undue demand on Sanitarium's production capacity. In fact what The Warehouse sells the big two don't. It's a zero sum game on that front. What is the real reason? I think Foodstuffs and Countdown could answer that, but they won't.

Sanitarium has been told to respond on their behalf. After all Sanitarium has a wide range of other products also stocked by the big two that may be under threat if Sanitarium were to continue to supply The Warehouse.

Just a theory mind you. Perhaps a Fairy Tale or a Cautionary Tale some on here might say. Sometimes these tales are closer to the truth than some would have you think.

Latest article, still no response from Sanitarium on commerce commissions please explain. Sanitarium refusing media interviews. People in social media saying they will boycott their products.

Sounds like something may have been said to consumer NZ ““Potentially Sanitarium thinks it’s more straightforward for them just to supply to the duopoly but we think that's just not good enough,” said Consumer NZ’s Gemma Rasmussen.”

Also has that the grocery commissioner use to work for Sanitarium for 10 years. Says they do have broad  ranging powers but are waiting for a response from Sanitarium at present.

Due process. Sanitarium must be given reasonable time to respond. This was Thursday's headline and it's only Sunday.

Completely agree with this, Sanitarium have been getting away with their tax-exempt status for far too long.

How about just cutting taxes anyway? Start with GST.

@Wombat1 We cannot afford tax cuts, we have to get serious about climate change mitigation, fixing education and sorting out our ailing health services. These need serious cash injections.

I agree, we can't afford tax cuts.. but sadly voters are not told a good reason, and only see carrot from national
If only government funded party advertising.. so it was an equally playing field..

But Sanitarium still needs to be fully taxed.. and all churches..

There was a reason why National raised GST from 12.5% to 15% with one hand, while John Key offered $20ish tax cuts per week with the other.

Tax churches and he prepare for the taxpayers to front up with more welfare that the churches currently do.
