(sidenote, I will - rarely - have a hot chocolate, however).

Coffee is a drink nothing more, nothing less. It's not compulsory to drink it. Sometimes I drink coffee, sometimes tea but mostly I drink filtered water.
I drink tea or coffee without milk. Tea with milk is gross as far as I am concerned, my wife drinks tea with milk but she is crazy.

The worst places I have experienced coffee are, petrol outlets, McDonalds, Starbucks and Coffee Club.

BP Wild Bean. While it may not be the best coffee, nothing much else is open in the very early hours of the morning while working.

There lies the point. Wild bean in NZ is fairly well made with reasonably good quality beans. It’s significantly better than something vile like Costa or most Starbucks blends. It’s not made by pressing a button on a fully automatic machine.

Take a look next time you grab a coffee from BP.

their machines are pretty much nowdays "load the tamper", "hold the cup for effect", "press the button", "wait until it stops filling the preset program", do some fancy stuff like add milk for the non purists and slap the lid on and ding that bell.

To be fair that describes the work flow I have at home with a high end semi-automatic machine. I use a scale rather than time but the concept is the same. Grind fixed amount of beans, load the portafilter (that's what holds the coffee), use the WDT, tamp and pull the lever. I can f around with flow control but don't bother and cafes sure don't.

I'll take a another look in March, that'll be the next chance I have to try Wild Bean in NZ. I'll give French coffee another try tomorrow though ;)

Give Wild bean France a go? Bit more of an Apple to Apple comparison than the comment about European coffee vs servo.

I’m not going to be in a car at all.

I’m in and out of Paris for the weekend and won’t be going near a car if I can avoid it.

I did drive past a wild bean in Slovenia a few weeks ago but I wasn’t at all tempted to buy a coffee. The one I had in Turkey over summer was terrible though.

NPD servos usually make a good coffee (and good fried chicken).

BP would be my choice in the North Island, although on a recent unplanned road trip to Timaru, I had truly dreadful coffee from a BP there.

In my hood, the one time I had Z coffee, I noted their coffee machine was just an automatic machine - press some buttons and hey presto.

I did have to laugh this week. We have had friend staying after she’s had 7 weeks in Europe. One of the first things she mentioned about the trip was how good the food was and was how bad the coffee was while she was there…

We have just finished a 2 week Canada and 4 week USA road trip. There were a few nice coffees in Canada but in the US we really only had three that we enjoyed. Sort of enjoyed.

The best fuel stop coffee was from Buc-ees in Texas and second best from Loves. The rest were awful. I think one of the issues for us is they use those wee full cream or half and half capsules rather than real milk.

Here in NZ I have good a few good coffees from BP and Z but sadly there doesn’t seem to be any consistency.

On a side note we stopped at Maccas in Oamaru yesterday, two coffees the same from the same machine made by the same guy. Mine was ok but my wife’s was undrinkable. It was so bitter. Sigh.

Z Andy Bay, Dunedin is normally pretty good. BUT, apart from really good and proper coffee shops (Mazzagran for example where I buy my beans), it is like russian roulette, it just never quite know what you will get!!!

I was in Melbourne recently, and they do very very good coffee. Get back to NZ chch airport, and ah crap shite coffee again.
