Zigg:

I do wonder who "they" are

They are them. You know, those people. The other ones that do all that stuff.

sir1963:

Its like "Woke", its basically anything you don't like that other people do

That's not what Woke is, nor why people get upset by it.

It's not what woke is, but that's how people use woke these days - if it's not what they like and to the left of their position, it's "woke".

I think the term has pretty much been fully co-opted to the point that is now it’s default meaning. Feel free to blame Trump, DeSantis et al for this, but even the more ‘moderate’ use of the term is still so pejorative compared to its origins as a positive attribute.

So...driving past the Fire Station in Palmy, and every nut case conspiracy was on display

Its enough to make you think they are professionals or simply mentally ill (paranoid), given their age, I am opting for the later.

I wish I had the spare time to be able to think up some of these things.

These are the local regulars, they move from one high traffic spot to the next.

I'm missing the fire station connection. Firefighters are involved?

No - rather, as per a later post from sir1963, the local conspiracy theory crowd hang out at different intersections around Palmerston North to spread their love; they just happened to be outside the fire station that time.

They don’t seem to be out as much as they were previously, and I certainly see far fewer (if any) of their beautifully written but crazy messages written in chalk on the footpaths all around the city - perhaps their scribe had their talent recognised and has got a job doing hand-written signs?

MikeB4: Galileo Galilei was a regarded as weirdo with a strange view

And there was one Galileo, which is why we know his name to this day. These people are no Galileo.

Carl Sagan said it best: “But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.”

When the fire fighters had their strike a while back, the nut cases tried to use their protests to try and gain more traction by being there at the same time.

Disgusting tactic.

But it is another high traffic zone.

Corner of Amberly Ave and Pioneer highway there is a rant about 15 minute cities scrawled on the concrete wall there.

I just want to dispute Columbus's inclusion as a genius. He believed, contrary to the scientific/astronomical knowledge of the time, that the Earth was 25% smaller than it actually is. Based on this, and a belief that Asia was larger than it actually is, he believed that it was feasible to sail west to Asia, even if it was ocean all the way. Hence also, when he ran into the Americas he called the natives "Indians" and the islands of the Caribbean are now known as the West Indies. It was luck (plus bravery to actually do it) rather than genius that resulted in the discovery of the Americas.
