Reality check is nothing more than a few bro's with a podcasting setup. That is what anyone can start up with almost no budget except those guys are now crying for money hoping to fleece it out of the boomers that lap that crap up.

To be honest NZME's talk station isn't much better. Mediawatch quite often calls them out on misinformation.

The worst example was in the lead up to Cyclone Gabrielle when their on-air hosts were playing down the seriousness of the situation. This coming from a radio station that apparently is an official Civil Defence emergency broadcaster.

They have confirmed they are now cancelling Fair Go and some news shows. They are the only shows I actually bother to watch for local news. https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/350239818/live-tvnz-officially-cancels-fair-go-midday-and-tonight

Because that is not how state owned enterprises work. They have a board for decisions and are expected to return money to their owner.

If they want a public broadcaster then that is something else. TVNZ is just an entertainment company that happens to have the govt as their owner. Look for Maori TV if you want to see something closer to a public broadcaster and IMO that is where the money should go to get them up to speed as a proper news source etc.

Oh I don't know how it works, or the best way to do it, but it seems quite important to have proper, ie not Murdoch etc, news from somewhere, and it needs to be on TV, so TVNZ should do it or they should be told to make space for it. Or someone with equivalent reach, if there is such a thing.

Isn't TVNZ keeping news at some time during the day, like 6pm ? Can't cost a fortune to keep the other slots surely.

Collating the news for TV at midday/late at night (usually for a very small audience) can be quite costly, as well as needing crew to run the cameras, video, etc at that time of the day. If it's only one bulletin at 6 it's a lot easier to manage, so I can see why they would cut the other ones.

Midday news in popular in rest homes , I often watch it at lunch time if working at home. I’m on a screen all day it’s good to watch the news that’s not behind a paywall

True, but the numbers watching are still far smaller than, say, at 6 o'clock. They would have a lot more "spenders" watching at 6 too.

Perhaps because he relies 99% on the donation of exactly one listener.

The problem with tvnz and 3news is actually caused by themselves.

they both think that by providing flashy sets, production and reporters “on the spot (usually a live cross that doesn’t add value to the info being presented), will entice advertisers to spend $$$. WHEN in fact all the advertisers want is a good deal on the advertising rate card for what is / was the best hour or two for viewership in the evenings. BUT, over time the rate card prices go up (to justify the tv company so called innovations and “edge”) and said TV companies forgot what advertisers were actually after.

Do people actually watch the news for the graphics, live crosses and set designs? Or just want the news as it happened?

The news is so "produced". The fake back and forth questions from the studio to the reporter which are obviously pre scripted and the answers already known. The camera cuts to Simon Dallow looking thoughtful as the reporter answers his setup patsy question. It's all about the newsreader and reporter looking good and the facts are just a side effect.

And do they really need to do live crosses? Especially when it live crosses to a reporter just outside the studio. It's like what's the point?

And to your point above, it's all scripted. There's nothing live about it.

That's because they insist on reading it live with fancy presentation graphics and makeup etc. If they just had a small crew doing the stories as they happened to write them in a more podcast setup then that would save some cash, and then just play them out in order for the people that still want to consume linear broadcast news rather than watching it online.

Looks like their fate is sealed. No more Newshub website, 6PM bulletin and the AM show. Last day will be the 5th of July.
