The miniscule scrollbar is a nightmare to work with.

Don't get me started!

In Word, the default configuration has the scroll bar disappear when you either stop scrolling or move the mouse away from that part of the screen (I can't quite remember). If you set it to "always" show the scroll bar... then the scroll bar disappears when you switch to a different window.

Brain dead. The smarter it tries to be, the stupider it is.

Geektastic:

Can I nominate the software that McDonalds have on the ordering screens?

It seems to have at least one too many screens to work through.

The reliability of these are also pretty awful. At any given time any given Maccas will have some or even all of the following:

  • Machine failed to POST and sitting at a BOOT DISK MISSING RETRY? screen
  • Machine with a broken touch screen
  • Machine with a broken printer
  • Machine with a broken EFTPOS machine
  • Machine that will take an order but freeze at some random screen

Quite a few times I've had to try not one not two not three but four machines until I found a working one.

I'd say half the time I order I don't get a receipt due to some printer issue.

I once saw a staff member go through each machine to reboot every single one in turn -- preventive maintenance I guess?

The only saving grace is they usually have many of these so I guess not a big issue if half are not working.

Do people still use the scroll bar.  I thought it was just a document position indicator these days.   I usually use the mouse wheel, Ctrl+G (go to page/section) or chapter markers (view.Navigation Pane).

Yes, and I'm trying to use it to see the position in the document, but can't because it keeps disappearing!

No mouse wheel on my laptop. No number keypad either. Lots of things different from a desktop. Lost of things not very well provided for. I guess Microsoft was too busy adding bloat (and there is plenty!). The big problem is trying to vertically scroll a page back and forth that goes off-screen while reading something. Arrow keys work well for that. Except on Windows 11.

Have you tried two fingers at the same time on the laptop trackpad to scroll up and down. Work well on my laptop.

That does work after a fashion but it is not consistent and the keyboard is simpler. It works with other versions of Windows. I don't know what it doesn't with this one. But thanks for the tip anyway.

Still have not heard what the bloat is :)

Also, I don't think it is worth blaming windows for not using a mouse with the laptop

I've never seen most of those. A frozen one occasionally. Printer issues are very common though (I think they're just out of paper?).

Run this. I think it encompasses a couple hundred items. I have not missed a single one.

Mouse doesn't work well in bed. Why should I have to change the way I live because Windows is brain dead?

Or just get a mouse :)

Looking at some of the supported technologies in Windows 11.

Audio, Video, camera, communication (network and inter-process), devices and sensors, graphics, notifications (push and pull), copilot, security and identity (e.g. windows hello, biometrics), speech, storage, virtualization, Bluetooth, HID (human input devices - keyboard, mouse, pen, tablet, card readers) as part of a few.
